Using the Nir-Z custom, there's some ring i just can't seem to cut with E.Q..would a noise gate be effective?

I haven't messed with it yet, as I'm still new to S2.0, but you could try messing with the envelope filter for the snare. I used to trim extra ring from my toms and kicks all the time on 1.0, and I assume the 2.0 filter can do at least as well if not better. Just start cutting that decay time till it sounds right. May or may not work depending on the snare.

I've found that my favorite kit on 2.0 so far only uses the avatar samples for most of the crashes and the toms. The kick, snare, hats, and ride are all x-drums of 1.0 instruments.

There is a good video from Toontrack on youtube about this. Can't remember the link...
You can reduce the room mic a bit.

You're right... The snare ring in SD is ANNOYING!

Use the envelope feature to the right of the screen.

Literally do it until the snare sounds fake, then route it to a multichannel and add some verb.

It works great.

Put a credit card on the top surface of your snare's skin and tape it a bit so it doesn't bounce off when you it the snare. Oh wait a minute... your using samples... nevermind...

I managed to filter out some in the 250Hz region with a Q of 100 and it sounds much better, you're right it is nice because i compressed it a bit and added a touch of reverb and it's sounding massive now
