As an avid metal listener, I've heard tons of metal cds over the years...and I'm starting to notice a quality regarding today's metal cds....and I'm not exactly sure what it is....or even if I like it.

So - take for example, the new Strapping Young Lad. I think it fuckin' shreds! ....I'm always impressed by Devin Townshend...

and you know...something about it sounds so very clean...just...everything is separated perfectly, and...it just sounds the way it does. I'm not exactly sure how they go about getting THAT sound..but, it's something STL has on this album..their last album....In Flames' has had on their last couple albums, etc..

so - I'm kind of wondering what entails making a record that sounds like that...thoughts?

and then on the other hand, it kind of sounds sterile. There's no real live feel to it.

Do you guys know what I mean? Opinions?

Yeah, its a general movement in metal production recently.

Bergstrand / Nordstrom / Devin etc are tending to go in that ultra slick direction. Not that its bad or anything...

Check out some albums produced by Jacob Hansen from Denmark, he goes for really clean/slick sounds but it sounds a little more live... i.e. the newest Yyrkoon album.

As regards the new Strapping... I haven't heard the actual cd yet so maybe i shouldn't comment... but i don't like the production on the mp3 i heard.

I agree about the new SYL I too have only heard an mp3 but the guitars lack definition and it seems way too pressed.

I wonder if I'm the only person on the planet that HATES the way the newest In Flames album sounds. There is so much ambient noise and shit that it gets really hard to listen to. Not to mention I FUCKING DESPISE THE SNARE SAMPLE. It sounds like someone swatting a bee with a paper plate!! I honestly can't listen to that album because of the production. I really like the songs, but they all sound like shit to me. Seems like they over did it with the gain on the vocals too... they're too distorted all the time. It's just... fake sounding. Sorry for the rant.

You're definately not ! I hate the sound too, seems like it was recorded underwater... Really don't like it either... The new Soilwork album sounds much better but then again, the drums are awfull (can't bear that snare sample, underwateresque overheads)...

Would you also not say that Andy does the same, to an extent?

I think the songs are ok, but the guys vocals are just retarded. I think overall, I just don't really like In Flames. They just aren't that good.
Brett mentioned the new Soilwork album. I haven't heard it yet but, I like them and I'm a fan of all the past productions. They get some killer guitar tones. I hope they don't go down the same path and ruin their sound entirely.

I didn't like the guitar tone on the new soilwork much... had a nasty fizz going on... :erk:

The sound of the new Soilwork album is fantastic (what a bass and low end !), except for the drums which I really don't like (but Dirk never had a great drum sound anyway...). And moreover, the songs are much much better (in my opinion) that those of In Flames (I mean the recent IF, albums like Colony are just masterpieces), and the singers are in two very different leagues...

The only new metal bands im digging lately are Shadows Fall, In Flames, and Evergrey. oh, and not to forget the best one , Children of Bodom, can't forget the HateCrew
