An article stressing the thematic and artistic relationship between the work of Tolkien and the world of heavy metal...

A notable but totally necessary difference between the two art forms lies in the very modes of the work; whereas Tolkien narrates the emotional terror of the Nazgul as they continue to encroach upon the adventurous hobbits, Immortal expands visually this fright through the musical nightmare of Pure Holocaust; again, Tolkien dictates the ugly brutality of Sauron's orc legions whilst the slimy Nespithe gives the dark army a whole new aura of evil. Therefore, there is evidently an oppositional contrast in the angle of how each perceiver views the common theme: Tolkien usually seems to tell of the virtue, the 'humanity' of the fellowship in their heroism against the outer darkness, and yet metal as a whole revels in that very same darkness, joyously partaking in the antithetical nature of Morgoth's dread creatures.
