How about clip comparison with Sm57, D2/D4 , 421 ?? are the D2 just as good as 421?? And can someone describe the characteristics for the D2/D4??
if the D2's are as good as the 421 then the pricing on those are superb

Personally I've had good results recording with E904 and E906, 57's get alot of attack but I only tend to use them if I don't have anything else. Used I5's on toms live and liked it.

I'd recommend saving up for the 421s. Had the 604's for a few years & found them pretty tubby on DW maple toms.

the 904's are an improvement on the 604's.
i really dig them, prefer the 904's over the 421, then again, ive never been a massive 421 fan!

Totally agree, 604's seem to have a really sharp high mid spike that can sometime make toms sound a bit ticky. 904's are alot more natural though and have a very fast, almost condenser like transient response.

Got a couple of them and while they sound great you get alot of spill from the cymbals, even in hypercardioid. Just down to condensers being more sensitive really.

I'm a big fan of the SM57 on rack toms and an AKG D112 on floor. Probably the only place where a D112 really shines

One of the main plus's for me with the d2/d4s in my experiance is the hypercardoid response, which is pretty tight/good rejection when compared to say a 57 which sound pretty similar to my ears aside from the pick up.
