Top 10 Progressive Metal releases

That was my only concern, really; that it's not metal. I mean, there are definitely some heavy riffs, but on the whole it's a very serene, ambient album. Not really much metal to it. But, if people want progressive, it is definitely that. Have you heard their latest album, Paramount?

I absolutely love it!! I didn't listen to Paramount yet but I take the chance to ask you if it's the same style? Not too metal like The Art... ? If so, I'll buy the album right now!! ;)

Hey - I don't think I've seen anyone from France on these boards before. I'm interested because I'm moving there in August. Need someone to help me into the metal scene there!

Sorry to hijack this thread.

Some people here said french people "invest" this board these days but anyway, if you want to know something, feel free to ask me by pm ;)

It's very similar to The Art of Navigating... Really similar style, catchy tunes, and some amazing vocal melodies.

Train Of Thought as prog metal? Interesting as it is one of DT's least progressive works (along with Falling Into Infinity). It is a very cool metal album but not really all that prog.

And Amorphis while a very good band are not really prog either. They are an exceptionally talented band who use traditional folk music within a metal framework while not really approaching prog.

Spastic Ink- Ink Complete
Spastic Ink- Ink Compatible
Spiral Architect- A Sceptic's Universe
Atheist- Unquestionable Presence
Gordian Knot- Gordian Knot
Blotted Science- The Machinations of Dementia

Fuck Yes.

Also add : T.O.O.H - Order and Punishment
Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
Symphony X - Divine Wings of Tragedy
Watchtower - Control and Resistance

and you have my list.

If Red in the sky is ours is considered prog.. its obviously at the top of my list.

I would say Fates Warning could be considered progressive along with Queensryche. I haven't heard either band though

What theeeee...... dude will you please do yourself a massive favor and start listening to these bands?!

Most prog metal dorks believe Operation Mindcrime is the best album ever created, I personally thought it was pretty meh.

Ouch - ban worthy! (ok, ok....)

Anyone who lists Ayreon and Dream Theater are gays.

And only reason I don't ban you for that is you have Mechanical Poet on your list. :heh:

Ok, so, I am mega amazed that there hasn't been mention of Crimson Glory in this entire thread. Hopefully it is due to lack of not hearing them yet....

My list as best I can do off the top of my head (and referencing some mentions in this thread) - these lists drive me crazy to come up with. Also, I am pseudo cheating as I had more than 10, so I am double listing a couple bands' albums here, in no order (and by the way, I consider these essential albums in your collection!):

1. Crimson Glory - Transcendence
2. Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry / Awaken the Guardian
3. Ark - Burn the Sun
4. Queensryche - Rage For Order (Operation: Mindcrime - sorry Jean Pierre!)
5. Shadow Gallery - Tyranny
6. Dream Theater - Images and Words / Awake
7. Circus Maximus - Isolate
8. Pagan's Mind - Celestial Entrance
9. Threshold - Extinct Instinct
10. Symphony X - The Odyssey (hard to go wrong with any SymX)
11. Conception - In Your Multitude

Ok so I ended up with 11. I couldn't bring myself to remove any to the honorable mention list.

Honorable mentions:
Mechanical Poet - Handmade Essence/Woodland Prattlers
Bride Adorned - Blessed Stillness (not sure if this falls into Prog Metal or an offshoot of Power Metal but...)

I would have included Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle but to me, that's borderline Prog Rock/Metal, same with Riverside - Out of Yourself and a couple Porcupine Tree.

Transcendence is not really straight prog metal, but it is pretty fucking good and everyone who hasn't heard it...should.

How would you classify it?

To me it is (almost) the epitome of Prog Metal (I guess that's where whole individuality of genre descriptions come into play). I could see how it could be lumped into Melodic Metal at times, but I can't see how it could fall into that or regular Heavy Metal/Power Metal or anything else.

But yes, a must listen, that we can agree!

I said I'd stop in another thread a while ago but I mean it now :p

Metal-Archives is backing me up though haha
