Top 20 of 2009

Appearance Of Nothing got my attention. Gotta get this ASAP. Manimal has been getting alot of spins on my iPod.

"Screw Keyboards" lol Thank you for the list and for the samples. I definitely helps to *hear* what everybody considers their top 20. For a guy who loves music as much as Glenn does, I really don't listen to enough "new" stuff. Already have a few new favorites. The Southern Cross is way cool and you gotta love the Riverside. Snowfall is Redemptions best, IMO, and would be my #1 if this were my list. Thanks again, Glenn.

You like Crimfall too? Yea!!! There's hope. And Mob Rules is so overdue for a ProgPower appearance. Totally agree with much of your list - Cain's Offering really did give us back what power metal has been lacking lately and Skyforger is indeed monstrous, and now I have at least three new albums to check out. Thanks much!

Thanks for pointing out J-Dub's avatar, Jen. Didn't notice. Now can't stop noticing. :p

Four of these CDs will be in in my Top 20... Redemption, Manimal, Amorphis and Riverside.

I checked out W.E.T. (quality stuff, but not my cup of tea), Mob Rules (doesn't grab me), and Vangough (blehh).

Whyzdom and Appearance of Nothing piqued my interest. Going to have to track those down.

I've made no secret of my love for Redemption. That said, I'm at a loss to explain why so many people who once found them dull, love the new disc. If there's a discernible difference, stylistically, between this disc and the previous two, I don't hear it.

Yo G not sure if you have checked out Souljourners yet, Southern California prog metal very much like Southern Cross, they singer may be a little better than the guy in SC...Good stuff all the way around. The Album from Souljourners is called Mind Control

The Amorphis and Riverside are definitely in my "Best Of" list - the DSO looks like it's heading that way, too. I'm going to have to check out a few of these, particularly Crimfall. Thanks!

I partially agree with this. I don't think there's a huge difference, outside of me thinking that the new one has a better variety than the others. Besides that though, I dunno. Sounds pretty close to the last one.

Just ordered the Manimal, Mob Rules, and House of Lords from the list above. The suggestions above were enough to sell me on those bands.

Will be looking to listen to more Vangough and Appearance of Nothing (great to see a PRS guitar dishing out some metal melodies).

Good to see some "new" old school prog/power out there. The old school stuff is all I seem to listen to anymore.

Here's my top albums of 2009...

1.) Circus Maximus - (2007) Isolate

3.) Coldspell - (2009) Infinite Stargaze
4.) Astra - (2009) From Within
5.) Heel - (2009) Chaos & Greed
6.) Outloud - (2009) We'll Rock You To Hell & Back Again
7.) Place Vendome - (2009) Streets of Fire
8.) Vindictiv - (2009) Ground Zero
9.) Missing Tide - (2009) Follow The Dreamer
10.) Constancia - (2009) Lost & Gone
11.) Leverage - (2009) Circus Colossus

Wow! Thanks for the Mob Rules. That new one is pure awesome. I also just bought the cd right before that one and while that one is ok, the new one, wow!!!!

WOW! Got the CD Saturday and was in love with each song on the very first listen. I haven't been this pleasantly surprised in a long time. There is a lot of average power metal out there, including older Mob Rules stuff, but this is Grade A quality. This is exactly how I like my power metal - melodic, heavy, and thoughtful. I could care less about how fast guys can play their guitars and drums.

AWESOME recommendation!
