Top 5 favorite bands - metal or otherwise.

Well I'll put my five favorite metal bands, I seperate my genres and dont prefer one over the other so I wouldnt be able to compile a fare list if I drew from 4 decades of music. In order of when I discovered them

Queensryche
Savatage
Fates Warning
Dream Theater
Symphony X

these are the metal bands, all progressive, still in fairly regular rotation 20+- years and counting

thens theres commercial metal which brings VanHalen w/Sammy to the table and thats about it except for random songs here and there

then theirs my fusion bands, my old hardrock/pre metal bands, my progressive rock bands, and my blues guys

Top 5, huh? First is easy, and second is pretty secure. The next 3 shift around somewhat depending on my mood.

1) Savatage - A band that just speaks to me on every level.
2) Iron Maiden - Still great.
3) Iced Earth - Ecstatic that Barlow is back.
4) Symphony X - Ultra talented. 'V' is a top 5 album for me.
5) Virgin Steele - Gets criticized for cheesy image, but people ignore the great songwriting, hooks and vocals.

Bands that used to be in the top 5

Twisted Sister - The band that really brought me into metal. Still holds a very fond place for me.

Metallica - One of the most significant bands in the genre. For 5 albums they could do no wrong. Then, it all went downhill. I still love the first four, and appreciate the black album for what it was.

Queensryche - Amazing band that has gone downhill and hit bottom but won't admit it. OP: M is my 2nd favorite album of all time (behind 'Streets')

Manowar - Another band overlooked for the image. They have some great music, but recent albums have been overtaken by the Rhapsody "Hollywood Metal" disease.

Steve in Philly

I gotta say, Steve in Philly is guy with some good taste in music :) All of those bands would be in or near my top 5.

1) Black Sabbath (Mainly the Ozzy and Ian Gillan eras)
2) Burzum
3) Children of Bodom
4) Emperor
5) Iced Earth (Also ecstatic that Barlow is back. :p )

As you guys can see, my tastes lean towards more "new-school" music than most here.

Although I think that these topics are a bit lame, lets write my favorite bands. :p

1. Fates Warning
2. Manowar
3. Iron Maiden
4. Queensryche
5. Judas Priest

Nor that I care for either band, but remember that Joey is producing or managing Rhapshody Of Fire :puke:hence the unholy connection.

What is that?

That's a diagnosed metal music disease. Symptoms mostly include swelling.

There's the swelling of the music, adding layers and layers of symphonic orchestral movements into your songs, and eventually replacing the song itself.

There's the swelling of the time of the songs, taking a 4 minute song with good hooks and swelling it enough to fit 8 extra minutes of said orchestra, not to mention cheesy voice overs.

Finally, there's the swelling of the musician's head, thinking that making good music isn't enough for a musician such as yourself, and you now think that you are producing fantasy movie soundtracks.

No known cure exists at this time.

There are some good songs on 'Gods of War', but you really have to sift through all the crap to find them. Heck, Rage of the Winter from Rhapsody (of FIRE!!!)'s Legendary Tales is a great song, but listen to the fluff they put out now.

That's distressing! How long do you think they have to live, if they don't find a cure?:ill:

lol! Very funny, very true.

It's funny, when we were recording our new album, we had one rule about the album: We absolutely would not rhyme desire with fire. Arguably the most overused and cliche rhyme in metal history.

Ironically, the band who recorded at Spectre Sound after us used that exact rhyme! Just goes to show how cliche metal can be sometimes.

Oh shit dude !! I knew you were in hell at the last PPUSA when you hung out with FK but had to miss PM. Arrgghh !!

Anyway.....

my top five....

Vanden Plas - Need I say more ?
Pagans Mind - The newest release isn't as good as the last two, but this band makes awesome stuff release after release.
Trail of Murder (not out yet, but if Urban Breed and Daniel Olsson together again "Tad Morose" doesn't finish in my top three, I will probably kill one of the two and Urban is more accessable)
Panic Cell - I didn't put this in here to make our resident poster feel good. The new release...... "What Doesn't Kill Us" absolutely rips !! Panic Cell has arrived !!
Sieges Even - Not a band for everyone, but they are awesome !!
