Top Ten Guitarists - and the twins!!

How many people included Trey Azagthoth in their top 10? If you didn't, you are either gay or super gay. NOBODY in extreme metal did more for the guitar than he did. That's what makes somebody a good guitarist. He invented death metal style guitar. Chuck Schuldiner did his fair share, but he was still pretty thrashy. Trey is pure death metal. His solos have never been topped and probably never will.

clapton hasn't put anything out worth buying in 20 yrs.

I think you have to include Berry on that list of top 100 simply because he is the essential base for rock music. sure its unbelievably basic sounding today but he sparked it.

Eagles: shit. henley hates frey, frey hates henley, but they go out on a billion dollar tour and play kissy face for patsies who will pony up hundreds for tickets. almost as tired as the current Aerosmith/Kiss tour. Can someone please explain to me the appeal of Steven Tyler???

the olsen twins have almost totally outgrown that chimp look they had as kids.

Def top 100 without doubt, maybe not top 10 though....

Those 'girls' look gorgeous. Are they really barely legal? The girls of today, you can never tell how old they really are. They keep getting younger and younger and they look like that. What do you think society is telling us?

"Society" isn't telling us anything... marketers are telling us that they know they can squeeze a shitload more cash out of a) horny guys by making 13-yr-olds look like porn stars b) little girls by making them think that that's what they are supposed to look like. How much is Britney Spears worth? It's just a matter of manipulating you into parting with your money. The Olsen twins, Hillary Duff, etc. are the tools to do that, but it would be hard to say that they are being exploited because they're millionaires.

 Haddsie hates the Eagles with a passion. I also think Clapton is an overrated guitarist, although there is a really good live album of his (at the Albert Hall I think) where his live rendition of "White Room" just fucking smokes! Seriously, he just lets it rip, and I think it's the only time where he goes nuts and doesn't seem so preoccupied making sure he stays in the pentatonic major.

Is that the one from the Cream's final show? If so, I have to agree...it's a stunning rendition, and Very Metal  you gotta understand the impression it had on a 13 year-old kid...Eric Clapton ruined my life! :D

As for guitarist lists, I don't believe in making them seeing as all Guitarists suck and sound the same anyway :loco:

May well have been - I remember the live rendition being so much longer than the studio version as well because he just wouldn't stop playing...

You are off your trolley young man. :ill:

I was only joking! :D the real reason is...well, there are so many bloody guitarists out there I can't remember them all and can't be arsed with the ones who are truly the best. If you forced me to make I list it'd probably have Andy Scott from The Sweet in it just because I could :p

He's my #4 man, not my all time favorite, but definitely one of the most talented musicians the world has ever seen. So where is your list!?!?! :loco:

I'm going with JK on Cavalera man, yeah Soulfly sucks ass but his work on Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos AD, and Roots is breathtaking.

Okay so the Olsen Twins are evil, they are metal, and now... yoga!?!? Great fucking link man!

I'm glad so many others hate the Eagles too!

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore - all great guitarists / shredders....but tough to make it into the top ten just through lack of song writing capabilities....

I guess it depends on what you want in a song. I'll take Vinnie Moore's "Never Been to Barcelona" or Steve Vai's "Blue Powder", over Jimi's "Foxy Lady" or Clapton's "Layla" any day of the week.

Anyway, where's your 'flawless' list you mong?! Come on....and none of this Zero Hour crap either. :D

No order, as I feel once musicians reach a certain level, there is no point discussing whose better Here are my 10 favorties:

Steve Vai
David Gilmour
Al DiMeola
Michael Romeo
Vinnie Moore
Chris DeGarmo
Jeff Loomis
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Frankie Hannon
Johnny A.

I'm with Papa on the Sep vs. Savatage thing. Given, I've only heard 1 Savatage album, and guess what, it was Edge of Thorns. At the time (I was in my mid teens probably), I thought that album ruled. The title track is awesome still to this day. The guitar palying was excellent, I remember.

I never thought Max was that good of a guitar player. Yes, Soulfly licks donkey gonads. And Sep is way overrated. Arise and Chaos AD were pretty good, but go on for way too long for the type of music being played. Roots is just a heavier Soulfly. I never connected with Beneath te Remains. I found it boring. Thrash=bleh...

Wow - just wait until you hear all the infinitely better stuff out there from the same genre...*cough* power metal *cough*...you have no idea what you're missing! ;)

So what does your top 10 list look like then?

Oh, dude, you are sooo smoking crack! Savatage doesn't even classify as power metal. They are heavy metal, pure and simple. Have you ever seen them live?

I saw them on the Streets tour when Criss was still alive. Amazing. Saw them again just this past year or so with new vocalist and Jack Frost replacing Al Pitrelli who has replaced Frost.... again, fucking amazing!

My favorite guitarists include

Alex Lifeson
Trey Azagthoth
Chuck Schuldiner
Denis "Piggy" D'Amour
Criss Oliva
George Lynch
David Gilmour
Tony Iommi
Andy LaRocque
Yngwie Malmsteen

Honorable Mentions

Jim Matheos & Frank Aresti of Fates Warning (on certain days they are interchangeable with any on the list)

Dimebag Darrell
Erik Rutan
Jeff Loomis
The H-Team of Exodus
Paul Gilbert
Edward Van Halen
Steve Vai
Ty Tabor
John Petrucci
Neil Schon

And there you have it..

Savatage is NOT power metal.

Have you heard Hall of the Mountain King?!

 For whatever reason, you always insist that power metal equates to Manowar or Helloween clones only. And I know you sometimes do it to tease or whatever, but I would love to get your serious definition of what you think power metal is, or how it should be defined.

Re: Savatage, how fine is that line between power and traditonal? Most people who despise power metal have little to do with traditional heavy metal. You can't seriously tell me that Iron Maiden or Dio are that much of a departure from, say, Blind Guardian, Angra, or indeed Savatage.

Savatage are not power metal per se (according to the Helloweenies), but then neither are Iced Earth, Nevemore, or Children of Bodom. But guess what? The power metal crowd thinks they all are. The bands consider themselves to be power metal - they're not lining up to play the ProgPower fest to fill a prog slot! That would be left to the likes of Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, or Zero Hour.

Not all power metal has to be derivative of Helloween.
