NFU, please, my good man... don't tell me you're using the argument that somebody has sold more records, and therefore they are better? That's very weak. I laughed out loud at a friend of mine who did that once (in a 'Rammestein Vs. Opeth' debate), but at least he was clearly an idiot.

That's like saying 'Five Leaves Left' by Nick Drake is no good because nobody bought it.

opeth werent a mainstream act. rammstein is.

tori amos is a mainstream artist. and so is whitney houston. so my comparison is legitimate...yours is not. stfu

same goes for nick drake vs. backstreet boys

How do you define whether something is a mainstream act or not? They have some radio hits? By these standards, Jeff Buckley is a mainstream act and should be judged by this apparent "# of hits" criteria. And this would indeed imply that the backstreet boys and britney spears are vastly superior to nearly all other mainstream acts on the strength of their 3 #1 singles on their debut album. Sure they didn't write any of their hits, but neither did Whitney Houston. Tori Amos wrote all of hers, but I guess that doesn't count for much in NFU land.

This is genunely the weakest agument you've ever put forth. A band is mainstream, determined by how many records they've sold. You can't separate acts into different categories based on that, thats just silly.

No thats not true, you get alot of boybands, pop artists that are 100% mainstream because they get that kind of airtime. Where as bands like Iron Maiden, Rush, Pink Floyd, Tool, The mars volta arent mainstream bands. They are infact very popular but not on the same level as most bands that get that sort of time on the radio.

I disagree. I think Pink Floyd are mainstream by default, because they are so huge.

But regardless, I don't think you can set a bench-mark for quality for mainstream acts that is different to the one you set for underground acts. All music should be assessed on an equal basis.

For a start if all music was catergorised that way, it would make things complex, boring and stale. I feel that for something to be mainstream, it has to be something ordinary, or usual in the current culture. Now, pink floyd is hugely recognised. But if you were to mention them to any casual radio listener and ask so whats your favourite Track, they would state they have heard of them, but not heard them to recollection. And then possibly ask so whats your favourite song at the moment, they will say something thats currently been available in the media of tv, popular sites and radio. I think Mainstream is a current generalisation. Theres no saying they werent at one stage. But now, the public as far less access to them as most present bands rock/pop

Ok, let's go ask any casual radio listener to give tell us what their favourite Tori song is... we'll get the same response.

I agree. I mean, fair enough Chris if you wanna look at it that way. But that perspctive doesn't validate NFU's point, which was the point I was arguing against.

you must have missed the memo...all my points are valid...before and after your pedestrian criticisms. just fyi
