Yes it was his choice to START recreationally using it (but as I said that was probably very easy to get into considering his situation and also all the pain he would've been covering up from his messed up younger years), but once the addiction starts, including after he died, its not a choice to keep doing it. It's a chemical thing - your body NEEDS it once its in there and shuts down without it.
So ok he made a mistake back when he started using, but everybody makes mistakes and it doesn't mean he isn't smart. And everything that happened after that was pretty much out of his control, the heroin was in control.
As Xena said, alot of intelligent people in respectable professions become addicted to heroin themselves. Just because somebody makes mistakes doesn't mean they aren't still smart. Are you saying if somebody with an IQ of 200 becomes a drug addict they aren't smart? That's not true - what they are doing might not be smart but they are smart about other things!

To my way of thinking, as soon as you take a non-medicinal drug just for the hell of it you're more or less giving 'Im Oopstairs the big finger and saying "fuck you, I don't appreciate the gift of life."
I've no patience for people who get addicted to anything, because they make a conscious choice to go down that path the moment they start using. Whinge all you like about peer pressure, lifestyle circumstances or any of that crap. If you choose to smoke, snort, inject or take anything, it's your decision and your responsibility. If you're strong enough to break the cycle of addiction and work hard to stay clean then good luck to you, but you won't get an ounce of sympathy from me.

I'm addicted to nictoine and caffine, a drink 3 nights a week (average, some weeks more, some weeks less) and smoke weed occasionly. I won't do anything harder then that however, i lost people close to me because of herion. He is now a fucking shell of a man.
If people want to do it, let them. It's their choice, they will do it regardless of you people preaching at them about it. I respect the decisions you guys have made about not drinking or anything like that, just as your should respect the decision I make about going out and getting plastered. I dare say I have flirted with being an alcoholic (I once drank every night for a month straight when I was 17) but I stopped for a while and all was well.

well according to wrathy and spawny is it. Any addiction to a 'non-medicinal' drug I believe is what wrathy said. So he must mean that it's ok to be addicted to medicinal drugs. Which is fine to be addicted to herion then, because opiates have been used in medicine for thousands of years, as has alcohol and weed.
Im not respecting their decision, what if they fucking kill someone while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol? What if an ambulance attending to an overdose means it takes 5 more minutes to find and get another ambulance from somewhere else to a crash scene and someone dies?

Here is an example of what I mean. Somebody could be an awesome writer & thinker, but shit at maths. It doesn't make them a stupid person because they are stupid at one thing. On the other hand, somebody could be a mathematical & scientific genious but not be smart about life - but they are still a smart person because they are smart at maths & science. Know what I mean?
Everybody has strengths & weakness and are smart at some things and stupid at others. Nikki Sixx was stupid when it came to drugs & alcohol. He is smart in other ways though and his drug stupidity doesn't lessen his OTHER attributes.
