Triggers

Do Opeth trigger the kicks live? I don't think they do, but I'm not really sure. I'm just curious about it, since a lot of DM drummers trigger, but I don't think Axe or M-Lo trigger their kicks live.

I was watching Martin Axenrots feet at the Milwaukee show cause I was looking for drumming techniques, and as far as I can tell, he was doing all the work himself. DevilDriver opened for them and he was doing all that himself it seemed like too, as with Dark Tranquility. I'm not sure though.

Yeah, some of the audio bootlegs I have seem like the kicks "fade" in and out as the show reels on (depending on the part as well), but that could be the taper's equipment and not the drummer, so I'm not really sure

THATS THE WORD THANK YOU VICE. -tips hat- just out of curiosity, who was the drummer and whend you go?

ok. I was just wondering if maybe you saw them a while ago and they didn't use triggers. I don't think they do either though.

When I saw the town hall show, they were definitely NOT triggered. The double bass in the early songs was much louder than the rest of the show, and they varied every hit. I can almost guarantee it.

no, it doesn't make you a BAD drummer, but it means that you are most likely a much BETTER drummer if you don't need to use triggers. I also don't care who uses triggers, but I'm since I'm interested in learning from watching my favorite drummers, I like to know if they're actually doing it so I know I'll be able to do it.

In Opeth's music where the double-kick isn't too intense, there's really no need for Martin to use triggers. Their sound benefits more being as organic as possible. When you take a band like Nile on the other hand... it's physically impossible to maintain consistent intensity on the bass drums on those blasts and double-kick runs. Drummers naturally start hitting softer as their muscles cramp, and the intensity just goes up and down, and you get a sound that's totally inconsistent. So triggers come in handy there. It's just an aid to take us past the limits of human ability. No harm done.

I'm just curious, that's all.

And yeah, as the show goes on in a couple of the boots I have, the kicks get softer on faster parts (for example, I have a couple GR Europe leg boots from December and during the double-kick parts in Deliverance, they slowly start to get softer as the parts wear on) but during the slower parts they get louder again (normal kick parts in Deliverance etc)...I just didn't know whether it was the taper's equipment or not :P

What do you mean, he was doing all the work himself? Triggers do NOTHING for the drummer! You still have to hit the pedals, keep in time, do everything a normal drummer should... In fact, some drummers that trigger, don't even use the i-want-all-my-kicks-to-sound-at-the-same-volume-setting! It's just a way of making all kicks sound the same, and, for the sound-engineer, it makes the kick easier to pull out of the mix! No need for mics...

But why all this fuss about triggers? Damn.. At death-metal speeds (250 bpm), it is impossible to play the kicks at a high volume. So instead of miking and compressing/eq-ing the fuck out of the signal, why not use a module? Sooo much easier, kicks are perfectly audible and sound superb!

I don't see anyone bashing Per for example, for not bringing a complete Steinway piano, a Hammond B3 and a Mellotron on stage... Why not? Same principle..

Every forum i'm registered has it's own triggers suck!-thread... Why? I just don't get it... I've read stuff like 'This drummer sucks, he uses triggers!!' soooo many times... Guess most people screaming 'triggers suck!' don't know exactly what a trigger does, and have never tried mixing a band.

End of rant.
