Has anyone seen Alexander? I was thinking of going tom, its at the cheap theaters. Ive heard it is awful, and decent. It couldnt be much worse than Troy.
I watched the other night after ZOD mentioned it was available for rental. I enjoyed it; battle scenes were great. The opening scene with him and that monster of a man was a swift one! 'Is there no-one else? Is there no-one else?'
I thought the acting was ok; the problem was brad Pitt was making his character into a god, or at least immortal; the rest of the cast was engaged in standard british epic acting. If they all acted like gods, spoke slowly and deliberately etc, it may have worked a bit better.
Achilles was suppose to be on a higher level than the other characters really. He was the son of Thetis, a Nereid, and as the story goes, he was dipped into the river Styx, which made him immortal, except for the area his mother held to dip him, and that was his heel. So I think it comes across as acceptable if he towers over the other characters since he was suppose to be more powerful, agile and have more stamina than anyone else. He was almost invincible and that is why I wish they would've included more of the Gods and whatnot. Apollo guided the arrow that slew him and it would have made his death much more epic than a simple Paris cheap shot.
See thats the problem in Troy. Generally it cannot balance all its mistakes. It shows us facts that only mythology (thus : GODS) can justify. Achilles is all you said but in the movie he is not immortal (except the heel thing). He can be killed with a sword or a spear naturally as every other guy. So some the aspects of his character that were developed because of his "immortality" cannot be presented in the movie.
I hope that someday a great director will make a BRILLIANT adaptation of "Iliad" for the cinema. With the Gods in it, all the heroes, good character development, and making a film that is an EPIC DRAMA, not a silly love story. That will be the best film ever.
neal: I didnt mention "Fight Club" because i havent read the book yet... *blushed*
from what i could see they tried to take the illiad, and tell it like a historical thing without much supernatural stuff....either way it is probobly a bad movie, but i can't tell, because i dont' care. I just liked seeing crazy warriors fuck shit up. Im horrible at watching movies, theres not many i dont' like, haha.
For sure. The way he killed Medusa was fan-bloody-tastic. He made quite a good lawyer as well, that Hamlin dude.
Ray Harryhausen's effects rule. I love watching the old Sinbad or Jason & the Argonauts stuff just for those cool effects. They were so genuine and painstaking. CGI effects are so disingeniuous when you think about it.
