Any reasons I shouldn't buy one/get something else?

Maybe I can get one for a pretty good price and I'm mostly looking mostly for a good vocal channel strip with attitude.

I have an LA610 which is the same 610 pre but with la2a style comp instead of 1176.
The preamp has very little headroom, making it easy to clip.
If a singer has bad (or no) mic technique you will find it very hard to set level (in my experience.)
Awesome for bass or drum room mics though.

I recently got a pair of Don Classics NV73 neve 1073 clones and run them into my Drawmer 1968me.
This gives me beautiful neve saturation with lots of headroom and then valve compression to follow.
I am extremely happy with this setup and I have 2 channels of this chain for about the price of the 6176.

I don't know what country you are in but 6176 on Thomann £1945.

Don NV73 £499

Fredenstein Bento 2 £162

Dramwer 1968me £1029

The NV73 into the 1968me is amazing, and I am also sending mixes through the line in of the NV73 into the Drawmer which is a brilliant bus compressor that plugins cant get close to.
The Drawmer can be used as dual mono and is great for tracking or linked stereo on the bus.

If you want to send me a raw stereo mix wav, I can run it through the line in of the neve and through the drawmer and back in through Apogee converters.
You should be able to hear the character that this chain gives to the mix.

Interesting. Thanks.
However that wouldn't be the full new price. It would be used, around 1500€.
Another option would be a used API A2D (I seem to remember you have one too) for even less. I'd loose the comp and EQ but I'd gain a channel and AD conversion which is cool too. Not sure it would be the best choice for vocals though but it couldn't be bad could it?

Yes I have an A2D and it's great for anything. Very fast response and the converter out level controls let you run the pres hot without having to pad the outputs like you have to do on the 3124
What converters are you using?
I am using the Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt so my interface converters are excellent, so the A2D converters aren't that important to me anymore.
To be honest, since I got the pair of NV73 I am using them for everything.
It might be new toy syndrome but I really love them.
The 610 eq is ok for adding subtle boost or cut but isn't that great really.
The 1176 is, of course, fantastic. I use a 6176 for VO when I'm working freelance for Setanta Sports and it really does sound superb once I know what level is going to be hitting the pre.

It's really hard to offer further advice. You may get the 6176 and love it. At least you can line straight into the compressor with that model. I have to line through the 610 to hit the compressor on the LA610.
Best bet would be to rent or borrow one for a tracking session and see how you get on before buying it.

My converters are currently prosumer grade at best (Audient ID22 and Focusrite Saffire pro 40 at home, and M-audio 2626's as a mobile rig) but a new interface is a part of the plan too. Probably a fireface 802. It won't be top shelf either. Just baby steps.
I have a friend who owns a 6176, I need to pay him a visit!

Just going to through this out there, but doesn't Slate's new Virtual Mic System have one of these preamps emulated?

it´s an awesome preamp although a bit dark. usually i´m running mine with a boost of 4,5 db @ 7 k. the 1176 is as you would expect it. there has been enough said about this thing i guess. for vocals and bass this thing kills. i got mine for around 1200€ and i love it.
