yeah ok, 90% of any city with more than 200k people is an absolute shithole. i mean really woo poverty murder homelessness pollution overcrowding decaying old buildings robbery not being able to walk home safely at night segregated negro areas, where the fuck do i sign up

I've traveled quite a bit (though mostly in North America, admittedly), and I think you have a very dated view of big cities, Erik. Most of them are really not like that anymore. Sure, some are (*cough* D.C. *cough*), but quite a few are not. Urban renewal and all.

hahahah ... such a misconception ... maybe in the 70's
nyc now is like fuckign Disneyland ... actualy the perfection they are trying to achieve is making me sick

and i think you spend too much time in the nice areas

even in the case of a "nice" big city, there is absolutely no single real reason why men should live clumped together like that, it's utterly horrible to watch... whatever problems the big city has is 100 times less pronounced in a smaller, more controlled community because it is absolutely impossible to maintain some huge metropolis properly

imo they should all be razed to the fucking ground, cleansed by the all consuming nuclear fire

EDIT: though i will admit to having a certain morbid fascination with the decay

LOL, there is no "decay" in *most* major American cities. Again, I can't speak about Europe or Asia.

ugh ok alright fair enough most major american cities have no low income housing or areas with higher crime than the nice areas, no segregation at all, no higher rates of various crimes per capita than smaller communities etc, right, gotcha

does your house have gingerbread walls and chocolate furniture as well

edit and for the record im not necessarily talking about structural decay, but mostly the spiritual variety

every big city in so. califuckia has some shit shit shit areas. "the OC" has some real dumps, riverside has dumps, san dieger has dumps, san beanernegro IS a dump, imperial county has population: 3, and... well that's like, almost all of socal (except ventura, i think it's mostly richers there :tickled: ) los angeles has some areas where it's like, not very wise for a whiteboy like myself to travel in. like that place i saw sunn O))) last week, i was shocked my car was still there 4 hours later. shocked and awed even.

"good block, bad block, POODLE BLOCK! POODLE BLOCK!"

and people pay INSANE prices for apartments so they can rush to a sweaty overcrowded subway car at 7 AM (and feel their blood boil when its 2 minutes late) to slave away in some fancy fucking fifty storey glass cage, eat a glorified glob of lard for lunch, rush to a sweaty overcrowded subway car at 5 PM (and feel their blood boil when its 2 minutes late) and come home and fall asleep to seinfeld reruns and maybe on the weekend they can get stuck in traffic for hours on some 6 lane highway attempting to get out of the smog filled fucking concrete hell they call home and catch a breath of fresh air

capitalism, gotta love it

Mmmm....gingerbread walls :headbang:

No of course that's not the case, but by and large, large American cities are fairly safe and don't have HUGE problems. Yes, they have problems, but then again, the whole world does.

all major cities have "decay" ... but really Erik you should visit one in detail, if in Europe or the US.
I pretty much have seen every knook and cranny of NY and have also been around Europe and the rest of US and can tell you that it is not particular cities that are the problem.

for example, some relatives were here from Hungary in Spetember and they were shocked that there are so few homeless people in NY. Allegedly Budapest is full of them.

as for me, I'd rather be in a place that breathes life and energy than a place where time seemingly stands still and people are against any type of evolution.

will move to those tpye of places when I get old ... maybe :loco:

Maybe to some people - clearly not you - the social, cultural, entertainment, career & food opportunities that such an environment provides are worth the trade off.

why do people deal with these problems? what is the appeal of living with 10 million others?

at the gates to the rescue once again!

there are so many of us here
and we are all so lonely
we are among millions and still alone
we are in hell, and yet so cold
GAR-DEEENS OOOF GRIIIEF

there's no god to punish us, and yet we suffer
throughout so many lifetimes in this garden I have dwelt

it's just that for me, any big city breathes filth, decay and death. life and energy come from mother nature, and in her embrace they stay

now to go fetch my four-track from the post, toodles

there are a lot of advantages to living in a big city. concert venues, restaurants, art, culture, blah blah blah whatever. there are also plenty of disadvantages.

personally, i liked the small town appeal of shitterside next to big town los angeles, so i could reap the benefits without paying the consequences unless i wanted to. but now population overflow is killing that here (and the desert as well  ), so it's almost time to leave.

although, i'd totally live in frisco if i could. even though it's a big crowded place, it just gives me a boner. a big gay boner.

to a certain extent ... but learning about yourself and what you can and cannot be is surrounding yourself with a lot of different people with different views.

and I don't mean by hanging on the net or reading books

Exactly. I love "getting away" as much as the next guy, but when it comes to how I enjoy living my life, it's with more options at my fingertips than I know what to do with.

The traffic does indeed blow, though.

you'd better prepare to cough up some serious moo-lah my southern amigo, the city is expensive as hell to live in
