UM Mix CD Discussion

Just got my shit from Cookie.

Will review later.

Cookie, my first two cds are in the mail. You might be getting two more after.

I listened to your mix Voss. I wasn't able to really "listen" to it, but I played in my car while driving the last 2 days. I was also shitfaced last night when I listened to it for a little bit. I didn't really notice any standout songs. Without getting into it too much, I can say that the Goth stuff is not my forte. I used to listen to some similar stuff a while back, but I never really got into it very much. It just seems to lack depth & most of it is not very interesting to me. It's great stuff to have on in the background, but nothing to seriously try to tune into or head bang to, for example. I will post a more in depth review in a few days after I go through the songs.

I got your mix today Mort. I will listen to it tomorrow. I don't think I've heard anything before in your mix if I recall.

1. Clan of Xymos - Farewell

Catchy stuff, pretty much what I have been looking for as far as electronica. Nice catchy synth lines, calm but "powerful" vocals. Good band, will look into more.

2. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again

Kind of slow, kind of uneventful, but it works. Not bad at all.

3. Echo & The Bunny Men - The Killing Moon

Pretty good, but even at only about 6 minutes I thought it was too long. Part way through I felt it begin to drag.

4. London After Midnight - Kiss (Club Mix)

Great band that I really can't flaw at all. As stated in the non-metal forum, already a fan :)

5. Christan Death - Romeo's Distress

Not bad, but I really actually didn't even realize when it was over. Pretty good but eh >_> if I don't realize when a song ends that is probably not good.

6. Marylin Manson - Great Big White World

I have been leery of non AS MM but this was actually pretty good.

7. Fear Cult - If You're Watching

Great synth lines, really just out in front and attention grabbing, catchy (most repeated word in this whole thing it seems haha)

8. Cinema Strange - Mr Quilt's Rotten Luck

Strange indeed, I have no idea what to think of this to be honest haha. Vocals probably are the reason I'm so like wtf, because the music ain't that weird.

9. IAMX - President

Kind of a big epic scope to the sound despite the general minimalism. Really cool song.

10. Richard Christ - Call Me
Good song, not much to comment on.

11. Deathcamp Project - Dead Hours

Was mostly boring, but when that main synth line kicks in it is pretty OK.

12. Siva Six - Pig

infectious like herpes but in a good way

13. Genitorturers - Asphyxiate

Not too bad, Evil "D" is better off in Morbid Angel though :3

14. God Module - Little 15

Great catchy fucken beat and synth stuff :D Pretty nice

15. Soko Friedhof - Perversion Bizarre

:O very good, catchy but the whispered vocals were kind of annoying.

16. Jesus Complex - Cold Dead Eyes

Great kind of epic and ... post-apocalyptic sound to it  great song.

Oh sure, it should come up when you put the CD in but I'll PM you a track list.

EDIT: Actually it's gonna be a pain to type out the whole tracklist and I can't copy it from iTunes. Tell me if the tracklist does not show up when you insert the disc and I'll do it then.

EDIT 2: Damn, ok

I think perhaps I did put a bit too much of the catchier variety of songs but I don't think I could ever make a mix that I would be happy with, so I just picked a bunch - some favourites of mine, and others just cool songs. I think it could have been more varied, and I did take out some more industrial-type stuff, and aggressive bands because I felt it would be a bit out of place. And actually I was really on the fence about the Deathcamp tune because I felt it would come off as being boring, but as for Cinema Strange: I personally love the vocals and it was probably a month or two in of being a fan of them did I realize they had a male vocalist, I had assumed the other. :loco:

And I've still got to listen to both your mixes at least once more and then I'll comment on them, but probably in a very general fashion seeing as how it's music I'm not too familiar with.

Mort!! We have a problem. I'm getting a ton of skipping on your CD. It skips a little up until the 7th track, then I get nothing but silence on the 8th & 9th tracks. The tracks after skip to epic proprtions.

The hip-hop stuff reminded me of high school when I used to listen to a little bit of Cannabis & Aesop Rock. I liked the Dredg & Mew tracks too, but there skipping going on with both of them. The mix also seems to be kinda bah sounding. I don't think it's the production of the songs, but maybe just a bad CD or rip.

If you can upload those tracks to megaupload & I will burn the CD. That would be greatly appreciated.

shit, yeah I figured it might turn out bad because the buffer error thing kind dropping down to low levels and would stop burning for moments at a time.

I know I'm a fucking asshole for not getting around to posting a proper review of those CDs; especially after Mort posted those great reviews, but I will get around to it soon enough. I did listen to each mix a couple of times & Mort's stood out to way more. The metal stuff at the end of the CD was stellar!!!

At long last, I have picked up Onder's CD from the post office, and I just finished my second listen of it. I wrote most of the following review on my first listen, then made minor adjustments as certain things came to stand out more on the second go. This is the first time I'd heard any of these bands.

A brief guide to my ratings: they're on a 0-10 scale, where a 0 is something I get nothing out of, and a 10 blows me away (though I didn't give anything higher than an 8 in this review). 6 is pretty much the cutoff for something I would willingly listen to on my own, though I might consider a 5. To sum up my ratings for the mix, I gave four 4's, four 5's, and one of each of the following: 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8. Hopefully Onder will find my review reasonably fair. I try to explain my gripes where they exist.

1) Deneb - Time of the Phoenix
Very nice atmosphere, and buildup of tension. The chanting and female choruses lend a very cultish and mystical feel. [6/10]

2) Absurd Conflict - Across the Wasteland
Opens with some Slayer-esque riffs, then an Eastern theme is introduced on the lead guitar. Badass goddamn breakdown around 2:30 - again, reminds me of Slayer. The dissonant ascending chord progressions which follow the breakdown are quite interesting as well. [5/10]

3) Appalling Spawn - Open Arms of Celestial Home
Upon researching the band, I can definitely hear the Lykathea Aflame similarity - which I suspected at first, but wasn't sure if it was just my lack of familiarity with this type of music that led me to what could have been an overly convenient connection. I'd still prefer Lykathea over this, though; this just seems more like "Lykathea-lite" in terms of compositional depth and tightness of execution. [4/10]

4) Spirit of the Forest - Feasting Trees
This song seems to be aiming for catchiness, due to the prominent lead guitar melodies. Unfortunately, I don't think it succeeds. Nice polka-ish beat around 2:20. [3/10]

5) Brocken Moon - Teil IV
Evil fuckin' guitar tone. The 'hooting' vocals are a little weird... but I can cope. This band seems to know how to make black metal rock, which I appreciate. There aren't quite enough riffs here for a seven minute song, but the ones present are quite good - some of them damn good, to be precise. [5/10]

6) Epuration Satanique - Les Legions du Faune
More creeptastically-cool riffs. Strange production style; the drums seem too weak to me, though the guitar is nicely fuzzed-up. Some catchy riffage around 1:30 to 2:15 which actually wouldn't be out of place in a Maiden song... [5/10]

7) Purulence - Sinking into Transparency
Aww yeah... sick rhythms here. This music conveys a sense of agony very poignantly. These guys seem to take many cues from Morbid Angel (even the trippy solos), and I hear in them a lot of what I love about MA. When they get slow, they make you bleed - when they're fast, you're in a twisting vortex of chaos. Great stuff. [8/10]

8) Fluisterwoud - Een Sinister Schouwspel
Ultra-grim, with recording quality from the very pits of Hell, as well as a furious tempo. The mixing is really awkward - I can't seem to find the right volume to play it at. The short ambient passage around 1:30 is really interesting - I could hear some strange things down in those depths of noise. [4/10]

9) Riz Ortolani - Cannibal Holocaust Main Theme
Uhh... yeah. So we have a, uh... country/pop ballad, with some weird-ass warbling synth-choir noise in the foreground. Doesn't really do anything for me outside the novelty factor. [1/10]

10) Descending Darkness - Gevatter Hein
Has a grainy, harsh-as-fuck sound, which is actually very satisfying. Nothing really stands out to me in the song per se, but it maintains a definite evilness throughout it, and never really bores me. [7/10]

11) Contrastic - Radicals
Some weird-ass kinda techno-alternative-metalcore-ish something-or-other. It's amusing, and listenable; I can't say much else for it. [4/10]

12) Pandemia - Majestic Suffering
Reasonably fun, speedy, murderous DM. Nothing really stands out to me. [5/10]

13) Pandemia - Outro
Not much substance here (it's only a minute long, after all), but definitely a heavenly synth sound. They should try their hands at an ambient album :). [4/10]
