ummm, wow (RE: the movie "crash")

i'm really mixed about this movie.

i liked the idea of this film addressing racial stereotypes in america, but i was pretty upset/throwing my hands up at the way they just sort of "stuck" the asian people in, just so they can have asians in the film (or maybe just for comic relief, even.) i'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but all the asians in that movie had these *really* flimsy, two-dimentional roles - they didn't even have any storylines like the rest of the characters. the film makers spent a pretty large amount of time exploring some of the stereotypical racial behavior of almost all the other characters (and then debunking them/showing what's behind the stereotypes), but not with the asians. i'd actually find it much more preferable that they didn't put asians in the film at all because i just found the inclusion of them as totally patronizing at some points. especially the ending - what the fuck was up with that? :(

i mean, i know, no one can depict a completely balanced, fair view of any ethnicities included in any movie like this, but i sort of felt like if the flim makers were going to put asians in the film, it was their responsibility to devote just a teensy bit more time exploring and researching it.

BESIDES all that though, i thought the movie was great and really touching.

hi, rant. :(

I love the Cronenberg movie! Even though the it sometimes gets pretty late-night cinemaxy in this this super-creepy, disturbing sort of way, I thought it was well made. (and pretty sexy, actually!) that james dean crash recreation scene is amazing. also, if you haven't already, read the book by j.g. ballard though! soooo good.

Yeah definitely, it's really good. After I saw it for the first time I couldn't get it out of my head all the next day, and I had to watch it again. It's definitely disturbing (the scar penetration...) but it's such a brave/bold movie, I think. I've been thinking about reading the book for a while, but hadn't had the time because I was reading other books for class.
