United Abominations

The first and last tracks (sleepwalker and burnt Ice) are the only standouts. The lyrics are beyond terrible, and cartoonishly bad. Most of the songs are lacking either a hook, or aggression, or a megadethy vibe to them. I 'm not impressed at all by the Drovers. Lomenzo is fine, but the Drovers add nothing compared to past Deth guitarists and drummers (poland, Samuelson; Menza, Friedman etc).

I wouldnt listen to it again.

I've long since given up on new Megadeth records after the disappointment that was "Youthanasia". But I just saw Megadeth Saturday opening for Sabbath and the new songs were quite cool. So my interest has been piqued...I may have to D/L a song, or two.

The Sabbath show, by the way, was AMAZING! One of the best gigs I've ever attended (seriously). Iommi and Geezer exhude charisma, confidence, class, and an air of "royalty". They truly are metal royalty. And that says nothing of Dio who was superb.

I've been wondering when the Heaven and Hell show in your area was! Cool. I knew you'd have a blast. Further, it was the Megadeth live show that convinced me to try the new album. Speaking for myself, I'm the opposite of dissapointed in it, which is to say I'm completely impressed.

I was planning on posting a thread about it, but I really dont think I can do it justice! I was that blown away by it. If I never attend another gig I'll die a happy man. Iommi & Geezer & Dio are the fathers of metal, really. And here they are nearly 60 (or older? Dio?) and they slay bands 1/3 their age. Each song was a classic....even the new songs have that Sabbath classic charm.
'Nuff said, really.

I thought Megadeth was awesome...they played 2 tracks from the new album (the record opener & Washington Is Next)...both gelled well with the old classics. Mustaine doesn't appear to have aged since 1987. What's his secret!?!??! LOL

Agreed 100%. I seldom come out of concert retirement, but I'm glad I did for this show. They can call it Heaven and Hell, but to me it was Black Sabbath with Dio. And for a bunch of old geezers they rocked the fucking rafters.

It's the hair... it covers wrinkles better than any fancy 5th Avenue skin cream.

I saw the show Saturday too, and it was great. Dio was much more on than at Radio City, I thought, though they did omit Lonely is the Word from the setlist. Megadeth kicked ass too, though I'm not surprised as they were awesome there 8 months ago on Gigantour.

As an added bonus, I got to see Michael Romeo, Russell Allen, and Jason Rullo picking up their tickets to the show at "will call". :headbang:

United Abominations turned up in my mailbox on Friday so I've played it a couple of times now. I have to say that I'm actually quite enjoying it but the jury is still out.

At first it didnt leave a huge impression, infact I completely glazed over during the middle of it. Much to my horror, I found myself liking the Tout track:oops: but all in all it seemed like a logical album to release after Rust in Peace. Well they didnt and I stopped being interested in 'Deth but maybe now I can look back and appreciate (instead of hate) the albums in between. I cant say UA is a great album and track six, in particular, bores the hell outa me but it appears to start off well and end well - time will tell if it drives me to fill the gaps in my collection.

Y'know, i don't think the new Megadeth is that bad, to be honest with you. It's better than anything they've done after Youthanasia. It's also their most technical album since Countdown. Very tight musicianship, very talented musicians, good mix of Rust In Peace technicality (note that though i am using RIP in the comparison, that i am in no way comparing TO RIP) and Countdown/Youthanasia-esque songwriting. And it is their thrashiest album since RIP.

So, in conclusion, it's nowhere near their best ever, it is their best in years, IMO. It's a big step in the right direction. A good effort.

And hey, it could be worse, it could've sounded like St. Anger.

Oh, i'm not saying it's better than Youthanasia. I'm saying it's better than any album they've done SINCE Youthanasia.

I agree, I just received my copy and definitively they are much more inspired that they were after "Youthanasia", even in CW has two of thr best ever Megadeth songs still is not a coherent album as UA is.

Now that I'm listen to the final product (instead of MP3s) my taste for the album has grown and even if I don't like the fact that Dave redo one of his best songs ever with Lillo on duet it could have been worse (like redoing something like 'In My Darkest Hour'), I would have preferred a remake of ''Promises a song I like a lot but wasn't enough to make my buy TWNAH.

And Dave also gain some points bu using Axel Mackenrot (Masterplan) for the keyboards, plus the speech from "24" at the end of the booklet, I don't follow the series but I like the character of Jack Bauer, mean motherfucker! :heh:

it's taking me a while but i am slowly warming to this album . a toute le monde imo is crap , original wasn't that good but better than the remastered version , just never got into that song . cover is complete crap , i do miss "angry dave " but i guess that's just life . give me more time to soak this album in and most likely will enjoy it more

Having that 24 tie in added to the cheese factor to me...

Musically it's not fucking bad. I think lyrically it's fucking one of the weakest albums in the Megadeth catalog and I just can't give Dave a pass....

I understand and respect your point of view, but since lyrics has never meant much to me in general and less for Megadeth, I could'n care much if he's singing about terrorism or Groundhog Day. I'm for the music and the music is good.

Especially is you cut down the remake of 'A Tout Le Monde' you end with 45 mins of solid metal where even the recited 'Amerikhastan' delivers well into the bunch. I like this album because is leveled, the songs are average or above average like 'Washington Is Next'. On the other hand if you pick CW you have great songs, average stuff and sheer crap. I hate that on an album, I can stand fillers 1-2 as long as they are digestable but in general terms I prefer a leveled album: all good (to keep) or all bad (to avoid).
