Diese Jungs vereinen sehr viel Schwedisches, das mir in den letzten fünfzehn
Jahren auf dem Hartmetall-Sektor Freude gemacht hat! Die Gitarrensoli
ballern in bester Arch Enemy-Tradition los, die oft zweistimmigen Leads
hätten In Flames auch nicht besser hingekriegt, der Rhythmus-Crunch könnte
aus der besten Sunlight-Ära und dementsprechend von Entombed oder Dismember
stammen, und die überraschenden melodischen Wendungen sind sogar Opeths
würdig! Christian Älvestam überzeugt als extrem wandlungsfähiger Shouter.
Wenn er auch live so gut vom bitter-bösen Growlen zum honig-süßen, cleanen
Faserschmeicheln umschalten kann wie auf "Indefinite Soul-Extension", dann
sägt er am Stuhlbein des Throns von Gott Akerfeldt! Sixstring-Hero Thomas
Johansson wäre der richtige Mann, wenn die Amott-Brüder beschließen sollten
eine Triple-Axe-Attack zu begründen! (Hoffentlich tun sie das nie, denn der
Schildbürgerstreich von Iron Maiden sollte Abschreckung genug sein!) Der
Album-Opener ´Unspeakable Grief´ fasst die zahlreichen Vorzüge der Band
meisterlich zusammen und wird einen vorderen Platz in meinen persönlichen
Jahres-Charts einnehmen. Lediglich beim Drumming gibt es noch ein paar,
wenige Verbesserungsvorschläge. Sollten die beim nächsten Anlauf
berücksichtigt werden, dann ist sogar die Höchstnote drin!!

Kann sich eigentlich außer mir noch irgendjemand an NON SERVIAM erinnern? Manchmal habe ich das Gefühl, diese Band existiert nur in meinem Kopf. NON SERVIAM lieferten 1998 mit ?Necrotical? eins der meiner Meinung nach besten Melodic Death/Black Metal-Alben aller Zeiten ab und verschwanden danach in der Versenkung. UNMOORED aus Schweden führen dieses Erbe gekonnt fort. ?Indefinite Soul-Extension? ist schon das dritte Album der Skandinavier, da allerdings die ersten beiden Outputs auf dem in Singapur befindlichen Pulverized-Label erschienen sind, hat man hierzulande noch nicht all zu viel von ihnen gehört. Nun ist mit Code 666 ein stärkerer Partner im Musicbiz vorhanden und man kann nur hoffen, dass diese Perle endlich von der Mehrheit entdeckt wird. Die Musik von UNMOORED erinnert wie schon erwähnt sehr an NON SERVIAM, wobei erstere lange nicht so holprig zu Werke gehen, was auch an der fetten, aber nicht zu glatten Produktion aus dem Abyss-Studio liegen kann. Ja, ihr lest richtig, diese Scheibe wurde in Tägtgrens Soundschmiede aufgenommen, klingt aber fast gar nicht danach, da der Sound wirklich eigenständig ist. Der zweite große musikalische Einfluss dürfte bei EDGE OF SANITY liegen, denn sobald UNMOORED in ihre hymnischen Phasen verfallen, erinnern sie verdammt stark an Swanö und Konsorten. Das Wort Abwechslung wird bei den Elchtötern nicht nur groß geschrieben, sondern auch noch fett unterstrichen, denn vom Black Metal-lastigen Blastspeed-Part über den groovigen Death Metal-Stampfer bis hin zum atmosphärischen Mitsing-Refrain ist alles dabei, was das Metaller-Herz begehrt. Wer auf Melodischen Death Metal steht, der auch mal ganz gut nach vorn losgehen darf, sollte unbedingt einmal, bzw. zweimal rein hören, denn die Scheibe braucht etwas Zeit. Stark! (cs)

UNMOORED _ indefinite soul-extension

Hach ja, es geht doch nichts über eine anständig lospreschende Death Metal-CD, bei der man weder Arme und Beine noch den bangwilligen Schädel stillhalten kann. Und fast genau so eine Scheibe haben UNMOORED mit ihrem aktuellen Album ?Indefinite Soul-Extension? abgeliefert! Doch es bleibt ein ?fast? als Einschränkung, jedoch nicht negativer Art, ist diese CD doch vielmehr als ?nur? eine Death Metal-Scheibe, denn mit jedem Song erschließen sich Elemente aus anderem Bereichen der Metal-Welt. So findet man thrashige Parts ebenso wie progressive, ja gar doomige Einflüsse und auch im gesanglichen Bereich wechselt man, was für Vertreter des Todesblei-Bereichs in dieser Häufigkeit recht selten der Fall ist, immer mal wieder zwischen aggressiven Keifausbrüchen und harmonischen Clean-Vocals ? gerade letztere finde ich in ihrer Eindringlichkeit äußerst gelungen! Und wer sich diese Mischung nur schwerlich vorstellen kann, dem sei beispielsweise der dritte Song ?Leave-Taking? ans Herz gelegt, denn was die Schweden hier an Variabilität und kreativen Melodien hervorzaubern, das gelingt anderen Combos im Verlauf von drei kompletten Alben nicht. Überhaupt ist es die Vielseitigkeit dieses Silberlings, die mich von Beginn an überzeugt hat, denn von überfallartigen Gitarrenriffs über ultraschnelle Drumparts bis hin zu den bereits erwähnten Vocal-Wechseln bieten Unmoored alles, was sich des Metallers Herz nur wünschen mag und machen diese Scheibe zu einem atmosphärischen Ereignis höchster Güte! Eine Ausnahme bildet vielleicht ?Morndrape?, welcher in der Mitte der CD angesiedelt einfach nur geradewegs auf die berühmt-berüchtigte Glocke haut und mit brachialem Tempo die Haare vom Schädel hämmert ? definitiv der härteste Song auf Indefinite Soul-Extension. Doch ausgerechnet auf dieses Hochgeschwindigkeitsstück folgt mit ?Cinders Veil? der vielleicht ungewöhnlichste, atmosphärischste und innovativste Track des ganzen Albums, in dessen Verlauf Black Metal-Elemente, melodische Gesänge, treibende Gitarrenriffs und fortlaufende Tempowechsel zu einer unglaublichen Melange gemixt werden ? ein geniales Stück Musik! Ähnliches gilt auch für das nachfolgenden Werk ?Spit Forth From Failure?, das ähnlich zu überzeugen weiß und nebenbei auch noch mit einer dramaturgischen Effizienz Keyboardlinien in die Songstruktur einflechtet, dass es eine wahre Freude ist. Die Produktion bei einem gewissen Herrn Tägtgren im schwedischen Abyss Studio mag das ihre dazu beigetragen haben, dass diese Scheibe aufgrund ihrer stilistischen Vielfalt in keiner CD-Sammlung fehlen sollte, es sei denn, man steht mehr auf seichte Popgesänge oder weinerliche Möchtegern-Rocker. Klare Empfehlung!!

Swedish Unmoored add something theirs, at least. "Indefinite Soul-Extension" indeed, though starting from the usual swedish death metal roots, truly retires from the clichès we know thanks to the construction of the songs that, as well as the classic schemes, explore different territories, especially a more americanized death metal made of square riffs and a killer growling, as well as some more atmospherical technical scores. Beside that, they show a good tendency to melodic openings, led with clean vocals and with the little help of keys. The usual swedish assault, made of a perfect technique and fast rhythms, is well merged by Unmoored with different solutions, that are made particular by the ability of the musicians to pass from a context to the other without losing the focus onto the goal to reach. The mixture created by Unmoored between the two death metal schools is very interesting, considering that from the american one they take some elements from the most technical bands able to create an intelligent death metal instead that from a generic guts grinder pot. Thanks to such choices Unmoored's songs develop along rather complex structures, rich of tempo changes and digressions outside the usual schemes. Often this recipe helps to build interesting moments, somewhere else they get lost in not linear solutions in which the band loses the control and camplicates the situation a bit too much. "Indefinite Soul-Extension" is a complex album that deserves a listening at least because, even if within an overcrowded style like swedish death metal, it tries to say its own thing and to build something personal and recognizable, even if remains a work for lovers of the genre.

Already from the first second, we can hear that this album will be blasting. The first song Unspeakable grief already begins with a huge scream that going through your body.
This song is absolutely unbelievable. This death metal is very melodious and with a very emotional chorus.
This Swedish band is definitely going to be famous. They know how to combine death metal and melodic metal and they also know how to combine blasting growling sounds together with emotional soft tunes.

A good characteristic of this band is the fact that they bring this death metal with a lot of content. There are a lot of brutal bands that bring this kind of metal but with no contents, just growling a lot, so the lyrics aren?t important. Unmoored brings it a lot better.

Another good thing about this album is the two voices. You can hear the screaming but also a voice that sings rather normal. But a good question is: what is normal?

My favourite song is the second song ?commit to the fire?. Because this is an excellent song to head bang and to mosh. Unmoored are like gods when they play this song.

There is one thing that I would change. The last song ?final state part III? is a good song, but not a song to put on the end of a death metal album. Put this song between two brutal death metal songs and then it would be great. But of course, this is a small detail. I won?t say that this album is bad because of a song that doesn?t stand on his place.

But when they would ask me to describe this album very short I would say: absolutely fantastic !

Ha, von Zeit zu Zeit kommt aus Schweden immer noch so richtig geiler brachialer Death Metal. Und definitiv dazu gehören "Unmoored", die hier wirklich ein heftiges Brett abgeliefert haben. Geile Blastbeats fliegen dir um die Ohren, scharfe Riffs zersäbeln einem das Trommelfell und ein so richtig geiler tiefer röchelnder und knarziger Gesang zerbröseln dir die Ohrläppchen.
Jedoch ist es nicht nur wildes Gebolze, was die Burschen da abliefern, nein es gibt auch fantastisch geile Melodien, die an alte "In Flames" oder "Hypocrisy" erinnern. Dazu schafft es Sänger "Christian Älvestam" nicht nur wie ein angestochener Elch zu röhren, dass sämtliche Nadeln des schwedischen Waldes von den Bäumen regnen, nein er kann auch durchaus clean singen, was sich mindestens genausogut anhört. Eingeschmiedet wurde das Teil in den Abyss-Studios, was natürlich auf äußerste Qualität hinweist und das hört man auch. Die Produktion ist fett, der Sound ultraheavy und knallt aus den Boxen, als könne man damit die Wände abreißen. Einfach nur brachial. Ach, ich wünschte, es gäbe wieder mehr solcher Bands, die in der Art losbolzen, aber mit dieser Scheibe sollte man erstmal zufrieden sein. Schwedentod der Oberklasse. Kauftipp ? Nein, Kaufpflicht. So, und nun geh´ich mit Rasierklingen gurgeln, will auch so ein Organ haben.

Hmm, again a band I never have heard anything about before, although they exist for almost 10 years now. There is to read that they have released 2 albums since 1999 via the small label Pulverized Records. Seems, that they have passed me by unnoticed at that time.

That actually merges as a disadvantage, cause I now cannot form an opinion if these Swedish guys have made such great music in yester years too. Then Indefinite Soul-Extension includes everything a future Death Metal classic needs. Beginning with a mangy and extreme sounding production, a pleasing cover (fortunately no kitsch), up to a crushing full service in terms of music. There are massive riffs (like a blend of Hypocrisy and Edge Of Sanity with a slightly Black Metal touch) meeting up with much varied singing, sometimes wickedly growling, sometimes enjoyably clean. Ok, that I?ve written off from the info sheet, almost literally, but this time it?s true what the label has fudged. I could not have written it up better.

Since the opener Unspeakable Grief kicked off with a raving blast attack, it follows driving, slightly groovy Death Metal, before they remind to best Swanö times with melodic refrains. Not only this track is going on with this kind of variety but the other ones follow these roots. Whereas the composition is ? on the one hand much variable ? on the other hand pretty compact and catchy. In any case UNMOORED is showing its skills that way, because I think, it?s hardly possible to achieve such a music from a standing position. Anyway, in between explosive lead breaks and felicitous acoustic parts get embedded, they even don?t shy using other instruments (is it a violin in Leave-Taking?).

Most time you get downright nailed down with weighty riffs, sometimes fast, sometimes slow played, but still with a fun factor on a high level as tracks like Commit To Fire (more in a staid way), Cinders Veil (with modern Black Metal influences), the extremely varied Phase Of Revulsion and the final ballad Final State Part III (posthumous writings) prove, especially since I feel reminded all the time to the heyday of ambitious Swedish Death Metal. Those of you who are bored by all these melodic Death Metal bands nowadays, who are not innovative enough and too uniform, but like this genre in general, should fall for Indefinite Soul-Extension.

Intense ! That´s the first word that came to mind as
soon as the great sound of "Indefinite Soul-Extension"
from Sweden´s UNMOORED exploded from the speakers like
a harsh and unrelenting storm. Crushing guitars,
pounding drums and lots of variety await anyone who
picks up this great album of Melodic Death Metal
reminding me a lot of old EDGE OF SANITY and sometimes
IN FLAMES during their "Lunar Strain" days. These guys
mainly use 2 vocal styles, with the majority being
vicious death growling and then some clean vocals in
between, reminding me of Dan Swanö style. To add a
special touch to the mix they incorporate some folky
elements which now gives away why I like these guys so
much (nevermind the fact that they remind me of old
EDGE OF SANITY and IN FLAMES, both of whom I adored).
In some parts you can also hear a bit of Black Metal
seep through but not too much. It is amazing how
powerful and crisp the production and sound of this
album is, especially taking into consideration it´s
only 3 guys making all the ruckus. Well done and very
interesting closing the album with a ballad. I almost
think it would have been more interesting to open the
album with the song, sort of like the "calm before the
storm". Hehe... This comes highly recommended.

"Indefinite Soul Extension"

UNMOORED belong to those bands which just exist and from time to
time they record something new. For Christian Alvestam and his
friends a way always went in opposite to their abilities. Once it
was due to their not so effective deal with Singaporian Pulverized
Records or due to their music that changed a little bit all the
time. On "Cimmerian" from '99 and on the following album
titled "Kingdoms of Greed" that Swedish combo drifted between an
extremity of black/death metal and more death 'n roll
areas. "Indefinite Soul Extension" was recorded such long time ago
(at Abyss Studio) that only some people knew about it and I suppose
that only a few die-hard fans have expected another good album.
Well, it was worthy of waiting, 'cause probably UNMOORED have found
their place in a small niche somewhere between brutality and melody
in a Swedish way. So "Indefinite..." is something what can
satisfies as the fans of an expressive death metal with some
delicate touches of blackish sounds as well as those who adore more
progressive elements in that kind of music. Some clear vocals used
and guitar work remind OPETH and the other bands which don't afraid
to incorporate more complex structures. UNMOORED didn't forget to
enclose some acoustic passages smartly blend with more intense kind
of playing. It may keep your attention for a long time, 'cause it's
not that album that won't fly through your ears and go away for
good. After a couple of careful listenings I can recommend it also
to the fans of EDGE OF SANITY and DIMMU BORGIR (just listen to a
fantastic song "Cinders Veil"). It's not their time yet, but who
knows... maybe one day UNMOORED finally will be that band which
gives you more than the thousands of others?

Sempre dalle visceri della Code666 arriva ancora caldo di stampa il terzo album degli svedesi Unmoored. Direi che si tratta di un album dalle sfumature davvero ampie, capace di virare da massicce dosi di death-metal a sfuriate più viranti sul black-metal. Insomma un?esposizione multi-frome di quanto ci offre il panorama metal odierno? Al di là della sua varietà stilistica, ?Indefinite Soul Extension? non raggiunge una compatezza sonora che gli conferisce uno status di album concreto, definito e ben dotato di un?identità di fondo. Tutto sommato, questi svedesoni ci sanno fare abbastanza, il CD scorre in maniera ?gradevole? ed alcuni stacchi strumentali sanno essere davvero raffinati. Se proprio vogliamo tornare a scuola, sufficenza in pieno!

Au brutal death délivré lors des débuts, le groupe a greffé plusieurs autres genres.
Au final, l?album est basé sur une constante alternance.
Des passages progressifs, avec voix claire (bien intégrée au tout), occupant sur certains morceaux une importante place, par exemple sur la 6 "Cinder Veil", et la 8 (outro).

Des passages mélodiques (solos de guitares développés, claviers) sur lesquels viennent se rajouter des éléments électros aux airs légèrement avant-gardistes par leur aspect dissonant.
L?apport de claviers rajoute à certains moments une note black et même black horrifique, une note dis-je, avec notamment un petit air que l?on entend sur la "Unspeakable grief" et que l?on retrouve sur le titre 7, "Spit Forth From Failure".

Viennent aussi de temps à autre les passages agressifs et death metal classique, derrière lequel on sent l?artillerie lourde : grosse batterie avec un son très axé sur la grosse caisse et la caisse claire (bien mate) ; guitares bien puissance également, comparés à leur utilisation dans les solos ou elles sont plus légères et « envolées ».

En somme un bon album, mais un grand merci aux autres influences qui ont eu la bonne idée de venir s?ajouter au death de base qui sonnait un peu trop déjà entendu. Une bonne évolution.

Ja! JA! JA FOR FAEN!!! Unmoored har gitt meg tilbake troen på at søta bror fortsatt klarer å gi oss noe annet enn bedriten Göteborg-thrash og forutsigbar melodiøs "deathmetal". Bandet legger seg et sted i grenselandet mellom thrash-, death- og blackmetal og fremfører moderne ekstrem metall som om de aldri skulle gjort noe annet.

Rent musikalsk vil jeg si at bandet er inspirert av band som Edge of Sanity og Hypocrisy. Det er ikke bare pga. tempoet jeg digger skiva, men også fordi at jeg synes låtene er så jævla heftige! Monumental riffing (med noen skikkelige knalle soloer!) og pulveriserende trommer er stikkord som jeg synes passer her. Vokalen til Christian Älvestam veksler mellom hissige black\death-growls til mer rene og ganske vellydende orale lyder. Synthpartier får man også her og der, men de brukes mer som et lite krydder enn som bærestøtte, så synthhaterne trenger vel ikke egentlig å frykte så altfor mye. Jeg tror nok også at dette er ei skive som vil gå hjem hos den gjengse Opeth-fan, selv om Unmoored er langt mer brutalt og rett i trynet enn nevnte band. Så dere er herved anbefalt denne skiva dere også! Tre av årets feteste låter finner man også her; "Phase of Revulsion", "Cinders Veil" og den rolige "Final State Part III".

Bandet ble dannet i '93 av Älvestam, som for øvrig er eneste gjenværende originalmedlem. Debutskiva "Cimmerian" kom ut på Pulverized i '99, og før det hadde bandet gitt ut tre demoer; "Wood Chuck Tune", "In The Shadows Of The Obscure" og "More To The Story Than Meets The Eye".
Oppfølgeren "Kingdoms Of Greed" kom på samme selskap i '00, men nå var innspillingen flyttet fra Sunlight til mer velkjente Abyss og Tommy Tägtgren som produsent.
Samme studio og produsent har blitt valgt til den tredje skiva; "Indefinite Soul-Extension", men Pulverized gikk dessverre konkurs og er byttet ut til fordel for italienske Code666. Og dersom ikke denne skiva blir den nye bestselgeren hos Code666, så finnes det ikke rettferdighet her i verden?

Det begynner for alvor å bli tett bak Vital Remains i kampen om årets beste album. Først kom Subliritum, så kom Nightrage, så Diabolic og nå altså Unmoored. Jula kom jaggu tidlig i år? Løp og kjøp, du blir garantert ikke skuffet.
For å sitere våre kolleger i norske OSKOREI; "dette bandet kommer til å bli STORT!".
