Venom

Yeah, Quorthon loved to lie, but you'd have to be stupid to be able to listen to the self-titled album and not hear the comparisons (not to mention several shared song titles). Quorthon lied about many things in interviews and enjoyed keeping his secrets up until his death; that should be obvious from the fact that his real name was never concretely known until he died by the general Metal-listening public.

Point taken.

Yes, it is blatantly obvious from the first album that Quorthon had not only heard, but was even heavily influenced by Venom. It's hilarious to see people still arguing against this point from time to time.

shut it matt

it's not as huge a fucking step as you seem to think to listen to iron maiden, motörhead and some punk and come up with stuff that sounds like the first few bathory sessions

all it takes is that you're the biggest fucking genius to ever play heavy metal music

which quorthon, obvi-fucking-ously, WAS, and you AREN'T

so SHUT IT MATT

Oh, so Quorthon never listened to Venom between 1981 and 1984. Okay.

Qourthon was a very introverted guy. I heard him talk on a radio interview that he was having a conversation with Andres Bjorler when he was in At The Gates. Andres was telling him how great At The Gates was and handed him a CD, and according to Qourthon, he had no idea that Andres was in it, let alone he never heard of At The Gates.

Furthermore, he also has extremely limited knowledge of metal after 1990. When kids go up to him (to worship him so he says :Smug: )and ask him about lesser known black metal bands from the US or recent bands he has no idea what they're talking about.

This only makes him look like a loner and uninformed, it doesn't make him look like he was uninfluenced or anything. So I can totally imagine he was being truthful when he said he never heard of Venom.

I don't see how that makes him look like "a loner and uninformed", and nor do I see why those are two qualities to neccessarily avoid if you want to make good music.

Just because he didn't bother following every underground act that emerged since 1990, it doesn't mean he never would have encountered, let alone HEARD OF Venom.

What sounds better, if you invent a genre or expand it. It's so much better to be the father of then genre with no influences than just a continuing porponent.

I'm sure he knows of them now or knew rather, but I don't think he found out until like around 1990ish.
