Videogames

@plintus: unrelated, but it's about time you contact me on facebook. :p There's a bunch of shit in Italian on my wall right now because election day has come and gone last weekend, but I usually post in English, so love me and get it over with. ;)

(Also, will you be in New York next September?)

Message me with your FB information (I use Google/translate, so no worries :D) Too lazy to look up if you are friends with Claudia.

I'm easy to find on FB... or not, actually, I keep my profile very private :p

I could be living in NYC next September... or not, but I'm always 2 hours away :D

Or dead.

Picked up Heavy Rain last night.

Meh, no time to play, couldn't even finish watching new Sherlock Holmes - was really fucking tired. Plus it was raining last night and since the game atmosphere is influenced by Philly - I decided against that kind of submersion at this time :D

Plus the game is said to be fucking depressing.

I'm considering buying a PS3 just to play that game, so please let me know what you think :)

I didn't like the demo - not my kind of game.

you should get PS3 though for blu-rays and the likes of God of War 3, Uncharted 2, maybe MAG and some other exclusives.

For Bad Company 2 - stick to 360 ;)

Already got a stand-alone blu-ray player.
GoW3 seems very nice yes. I'll consider it :p

I'll stick to my PC, thank you very much ;)

@Rahvin

I think for general usefullness I´d chose Garrus. He is tough as nails. I think Thane´s background is intriguing as well as the mystery around his persona. Samara´s personal quest is heart breaking. True story: another member from the band developed a severe crush on Miranda while watching me play the game. He shall remain anonymous though.

How about you?

@Plintus

If it´s just the music you are interested in I think the whole score to PT is available on youtube. Massive props to you if you can stand the - by now - ancient interface and play it over again 2010.

Fallout 2 was indeed an amazing game and I loved that Bethesda gave it a go again, but what truly got me hooked on Black Isle was Baldur´s gate. Favourite character for me was the chaotic evil wizard Xzar you could have join your party. What an utterly evil being. He was so evil that he wanted to kill himself, not for depression but for pure evilness. Or to quote him whenever he was killed in battle "And the mad wizard falls! ...saves me the trouble".

:D

Tali's fan art is also pretty cool: http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1747/talicz.jpg

Miranda's hot, but she was a bitch in my game: http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/9941/masseffect2c.jpg

I didn't get along with Xzar :D But it was so long ago, and I always tried to play lawful characters (not any longer, although I finished ME2 as Paragon... but I'm playing an asshole in Dragon Age :D

Last battle in the original BG was epic - endless pausing, and I'm pretty sure I killed the boss with the last arrow, which was even more awesome. Ah, good times =)

I just realized I had Annah theme on my PC for a really long time - got an mp3 somewhere times ago.

Buying PT is an impossible task (or pricey), but for some very strange reason you can easily get it through other channels... time to put my netbook to work :D I really want to revisit it since during the first (and only?) playthrough I was more into beating the game than actually getting into all the stuff they were talking about, although setting was amazing. I remember some dialogue about the war and stuff, but I was more like "where's the next fight!!!"

I've been a Bioware fan since they were called Black isle. In fact there is a musical reference to Planescape Torment on WAtV.

Mass effect 2 is probably the best game I ever played and it kept me busy for weeks during the US tour.

Dragon age rocked and right now i'm playing the expansion Awakening.

Assassin's creed 2 I liked a lot. Much better than the first one in any case.

Also I got Final Fantasy XIII on the tour but it wasn't really my cup of tea even though I have to acknowledge its quality.

All I really want to say is: Get Mass effect 2! Whatever the cost...

...I even had to get a euro version when I got home.

Do you like God of War? And I haven't played FFXII nor FFXIII, too time consuming :p . Perhaps on vacations.

I was worried that my life was going to turn into some kind of obnoxious LARP in which members of DT send me on fetch-quests to find musical references. Thankfully, this one was easy. The answer:

I will confess to having never played PT, but as a young man I cut my teeth on Baldur's Gate II. That game was so epic, I think I actually lost an entire summer of my life playing it in 20-hour sessions. I'm really interested in picking it back up again, but I'm not sure I'd be able to handle it responsibly.

Good one :D

BTW, correction: Black Isle dude went on to create Obsidian Entertainment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian_Entertainment), who are currently about to release Alpha Protocol and New Vegas (!) later in the year.

BG2 was so epic - I couldn't finish it :D I bought around 4 different editions of 1st and 2nd and combinations of those and all the sub-products (Icewind Dale anyone?)

Too bad my train ride is only 15 minutes long, otherwise I'd be plugging away at these games while en route to work... and then some maybe :p

I'm really sceptical of Dead Space being any good, haven't played it, but a 5-h Doom 3
ripoff from EA isn't making me drool either. And going as far as calling it one of the best
games ever is just total BS. Have you even played MGS4 or Uncharted 2, fuck Dead Space.
The only bad thing about Dead Space is that it'll make you throw some of your pants away. Maybe even your sofa. Lemme rewrite that in case I offended someone: THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED. At least give it a try before bashing it.

I played Fallout 2 A LOT back in the day, too, finished it several times - modern games aren't that great comparing to get into. And I conned my friend to buy Baldur's Gate - pirated version, of course; it was MADLY expensive back in the day since it was on 4 CDs (FOUR FUCKING CDs!!!), and it was a cost per CD back in the day
I played Fallout 1 and 2 A LOT back in the day, too! I also finished them several times, with evil and good characters. I beat Fallout 3 aswell, as previously mentioned, but I think i can say it wasn't even half entertaining as Fallout 1 or 2, even it being 3D and all.

I also beat Baldur's Gate, but I didn't like it that much because most of the maps were not related to the main mission at all, and they were pretty much only battles and/or not so entertaining side quests, in my humble opinion.

My favorite character was Minsc. He was that paladin, or maybe a good knight, who had a squirrel named Boo. "Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!". "Camaraderie, adventure, and steel on steel. The stuff of legends! Right Boo?" Someone even created a site for them! Check out http://www.minscandboo.com/

For those considering God of War 3, I'd recommend they play GoW 1 and GoW 2 before, so they can follow the story. They're very nice games!

I've also played Planescape: Torment, but never beat it because I couldn't handle all that text and conversation which led nowhere.

A little note about Condemned 2: Bloodshot, which I've mentioned before. Until my last post, I though it was an averagely nice game. Well... I've beat it and all I can say is that the last 30% of the game is PURE SHIT! Stay away from it! It seems like they needed one year to finish the game and only one week was given. The story and the missions become ridiculous!

Does anybody have any nice horror games to recommend?

True story: another member from the band developed a severe crush on Miranda while watching me play the game. He shall remain anonymous though.

I can certainly see this mysterious band member's point. ;) Considering whom her character is modeled upon and voiced by I imagine he must have become an avid follower of a certain TV series.
I was pretty smitten too, and ended up pissing Jack off a lot as a result.

How about you?
I'm with you about Thane's background, it's probably the most interesting of the bunch. Too bad he's really not that special in action. The same goes for most of what appear to be "hybrid" build: I ended up picking a combination of Garrus/Miranda/Samara most of the times. I would have liked Grunt to see more of the battlefield as well (love the krogan character model), but he always seemed a little "meh", despite his killing-machine background kept claiming otherwise.

Bonus "probing Uranus" video.

Fail.

When I got my first PS3, BR players cost around the same money, very few were cheaper. Things are different almost 3 years later, but why would you ever need an extra video appliance? :D

Half price, silent (yes, silent, not ALMOST silent). Also, it fits in the rack, where my old DVD player was placed.

Considering getting a pre-owned ps3 (slim) now though. Always hated Sony, but I have to admit that a few of those exclusive titles seem very nice.

Started Heavy Rain - perfectly paced game for an evening when you are exhausted after a long day at work, and not so much suited for a Saturday morning or a gaming night. Didn't move along too far, but of what I saw - dude, it IS fucking Philadelphia! I recognized quite a few locations, the skyline is familiar as well, although they show mainly South Philly, where you won't catch me dead... actually - only if you catch me there, I might as well be shot already. Funny bit: they had Chinese on a Race Street street sign - it goes through downtown and starts in Chinatown. Now I need to look out for the Troc and gayborhood rainbows under street signs in that district :D

It was a pet hamster. And "go for the eyes" bit is classic :D His othe quotes were cracking me up as well.

And if you played BG 12 years ago (twelve fucking years!) - it was just what the doctor ordered. I think it (along with Fallout 2 and M&M6, I think) started the whole RPG "revolution" (remember that RTS boom of the later 90's?) and brought something quite revolutionary to the table. Well, I don't have to tell you that BioWare makes the best RPGs since then (besides occasional jewel here and there, like Bethesda's stuff, but I still prefer BioWare).

Horror games - I personally can't play any of the F.E.A.R. titles. I have all of them, but that whole jHorror aesthetic just creeps me out (yeah, I totally think that The Ring and Grudge remakes are the scariest movies ever made (I couldn't even watch Grudge 2). Guilty pleasure of mine at teh same time though :) Yet have to see Paranormal Activity, buuut I think that'll wait.

Resident Evil, obviously, but everyone is saying 4 - I, for one, can't get over ancient graphics (I can do isometric RPG any day, but not an action game from taht era).

GoW has a one-dimensional character and the best thing about it is violence :D I got the rehashed version for PS3 - nah, even with improved hi-res textures and overall overhaul it's not worth my time =/ I'd ratehr read up on Wikipedia on what's up. And i think in Europe the GOW Collection was included into Ultimate Edition.

BTW, the game has the best fucking implementation EVER of L3+R3. EVER. No, you won't be ever to beat that. I saw that on YouTube in one of pre-release videos, and that was fucking brilliant!

Just no spoilers, please :D

Haha, I'm with you. Played some of those games and they're pretty damn scary. And they keep getting worse too...

Paranormal Activity was interesting though. Freaked me out a bit :p

Size matters, eh? :D

Yeah, and it's not like "jump at you" kind of scary, it's "I'll turn around slowly and look at you and make a sudden loud sound and some creepy shit, too" scary. Suspense and supernatural - I dunno, just gets to me. Maybe cuz I can't find rational explanation soon enough and they keep setting up a scary moment like in the Hollywood Grudge (like, just a moment before you wet your pants in a particularly scary moment - you KNOW it's coming).

You can close your eyes while watching a movie if you are really freaking out, but you can't play a game with your eyes closed :D Plus I can't enjoy it throughout - I'm waiting for a sudden shit like that reflection thing in the Grudge remake... I was watching the movie on FF (yes, I was that fucking creeped out, and there's this somber scene coming on, so I just play it on normal... and guess WHAT happens :D)

I have only tried F.E.A.R 2 and I didn't like it. I love horror movies, but oriental horror is not my favorite. I believe that's why I didn't like F.E.A.R 2. In the other hand, there's a Thai movie called Shutter which scared the hell out of me! I recommend it. Four years later, an American version of this same movie was released, but I've seen terrible reviews of it. I would stick to the Thai version.

I gotta check out Paranormal Activity.

Back to the games: I've ordered a horror game called Siren: Bloodcurse, but it still didn't arrive. There was an American version which could be bought in PSN, but I wanted to get the oriental version because the American one suffered a lot of restrictions. No blood! Where's the fun? Does anyone know this game?

Yeah, it was released on the US PSN, episode by episode I think, never checked it out though - not that big on horror games like that. Have some Silent Hill, Homecoming I think laying around somewhere.

Heavy Rain is great. Very different from anything I'd remotely like, but I'm a sucker for little details. And the fuckers figure out how to really connect you to the characters. It's more like watching a movie like Se7en, probably, but where you control the cast and stuff.

And you can play it for 10 minutes a day :D
