Viking metal like gore metal is a genre solely based on lyrical content and isn't really based on the actual sound of the band so should therefore not even be considered a genre.

Wrong. It isn't based upon lyrics, because if that were true, then Amon Amarth would be considered Viking metal when they arn't.

Viking metal has a rather distinctive sound, which can easily be heard, without much folk influences in Thyrfing and Ancient Rites.

Uh plenty of people consider AA to be "viking metal" which is ridiculously stupid. It's black metal with an epic, battle-y feel and usually some kind of obvious/audible folk influences...

Yeah, people consider them to be it, but that doesn't make them it. Just like the idiots who consider My Dying Bride to be "dark metal."

Exactly. The genre does not exist. Any genre of metal can have viking metal lyrics and it wouldn't change the genre. There is also no given "viking" sound. We don't know what "viking" music sounded like because none of it was actually recorded.

Ah, get off your fucking high horses. Metal performed by people who create albums about Vikings can be called Viking metal can't they?

I mean, fuck, if the ad-men are pushing the whole viking-ist-krieg shtick, then reckon you can call Viking metal a genre. Don't come back with some hyper-intellectualised bollocks like "Lyrics alone cannot define a genre". That would hold some credence if the whole genre thing wasn't just a convenient way for the labels to sell you more shite.

It's still stupid because these bands are already in a genre. It makes about as much sense as calling Immortal Holocaust Metal.
