I'm trying to shop sensibly here, I don't want to blow money on a mic that's too bright and brittle when it comes to screamers/growlers. So far I've had success with 57/58's, but I want to try something a little different. An LDC for example, but one that's not going to be overly open/harsh when a screamer steps up? But equally I want it to be all-round enough to sound nice on actual singers.

Not on a huge budget so no top-end suggestions please

Sm7b is a little over budget at the present, after the next couple of projects I'll grab one though but need something a little cheaper for the next few months. I don't want budget stuff though. I'll look into the others, thanks.

Go sm57 with a popfilter and save up for the sm7b! 57 is actually very close to the sm7b!

57 is really close to the SM7B, use a pop filter and dont sing from too close because of the pronounced proximity effect. You will be really pleasantly surprised.

I got my SM7B new for 270€. I think it's one of the best mics to record rock & metal voices imho.
