The Kop!
Arrite people.. we have a problem. The german train drivers are in the middle of heavy debates about a seperate collective wage agreement. They were already on strike a few weeks ago and may go on strike again in early august. I dont know about you guys, but most people will probably need a train to go from Hamburg to Itzehoe.
The Deutsche Bahn lost its monopoly a few years ago, so maybe there's a way to reach Itzehoe with those.. either way, should a strike come, we're pretty proper fucked. Just thought Id let you know.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Considering I don't speak a word of German and I have to make that train, it will be all the more confusing.

I really don't want to spend money for a taxi, but if it comes to that, when are you guys planning on leaving Hamburg City station? I'm going to be there August 2 in the early afternoon. If anybody on the boards here is interesting in meeting up there and splitting a cab fair (if it comes to that), I'm interested.

if there is a strike and no trains at all, from the station "hamburg Hauptbahnhof" take a "s-bahn" ( either the S1 -dir. Wedel, S31 dir. Altona or S3 dir. Pinneberg =>if we can trust the website of the company) or the taxi until the station called "Hamburg-Altona". There, there are trains from an other company (NOB) that go directly to Itzehoe ;).
With that you should be able to avoid the taxi for a long trip.

The NOB trains for Itzehoe leave the said station every 33min past the hour, it seems.

And lots of people (at least the young people) can speak English here, so dont worry.

I just heard there's gonna be a vote among the train drivers, the result is only going to be in around monday the 6th, so Wacken is pretty safe. Let's hope it stays that way

It looks like we have until monday the 6th.. Wacken is over saturday night, so you can leave sunday morning and get to Hamburg.. no problem there. Let's just hope they keep their plans

yeah, but we have to return to Hamburg, sooo it's nice to reach Wacken, but we have to come back and take airplanes!
you can take the same train you took to go there to come back to hamburg. Did you plan on doing all your trip by train, or do you take the plane to go to hamburg?

At least i can go from where i live to wacken without taking any DB trains! But they better noz make a strike, because my brother is coming here by train.

Thankfully!

Okay, so, in a nutshell, this is how I plan to get to Wacken. Tell me if I need to change it.
  • Fly plane from JFK, New York to Frankfurt.
  • Get transfer from Frankfurt to Hamburg Lubeck. Already paid for.
  • Take bus/shuttlebus/whatever from Hamburg Lubeck to the trainstation in central Hamburg.
  • Take a train from Hamburg Hautbanhoff (spelling?) to Itzahoe.
  • Get out at Itzahoe.
  • Take shuttle from Itzahoe to Wacken campground.

Is that plan flawed?

you only have to take the train from hamburg to Itzehoe i presume? then that's good, as this part can be done with trains from other companies. You should be able to get there whatever happens!

for the train from hamburg to itzehoe, if there is a srtike, do what i said. The other station is only 10 min away from hauptbahnhof with the subway (s-bahn). If you already know at what time you will be in hamburg, i can look up on the webiste the train schedules, and tell you the number of the train you`d have to take.
Only the Deutsche Bahn is planning strikes so basically any other train (like those of the NOB company) would do it.Its even probabily easier to take this even if there are no strikes so you'd only have to go to the other station in hamburg, and then you dont have to take an other train after.

for people with some knowledge of german, you can look up train schedules (1st link) or subway schedules to get to the "Hamburg Altona" Station (2nd link).

Thanks! You're a life saver!

no problem :)

i just remembered the first time i went to a festival 2 years ago... it was in the same country i lived in but it was already somehow an adventure ^^ . It was in the flemish speaking part of Belgium, and as i just came back from an exchange year in the US, i had forgotten almost all the flemish i had learn :erk:

The only problem now is that i wonder how i will be able to carry all the stuff to go there, because this year, there's no one we know who get there by car and can take the heavy / annoying to carry stuff (drinks and camping chairs)...

now you have to learn at least this one sentence in German and you are all ready to go: "ein Bier, bitte"

Something like that.

I want to make a porno called "Sluts in Virginia". Anybody else game?

Anyways.... I'd look forward to meeting up with any UM board members at Wacken! I'm going to be camping in the reserved area with the Kerrazy-Torrents camp.
