I agree you have to try stuff. For example that SOS article gave the HD25's a blue ribbon and I hated both pairs of those I owned. In general I've never been fond of senn headphones though even though i've owned 4 pairs (because I kept buying based on reco's and reviews instead of experience).
I agree that the M50's aren't flat but I like them for tracking and can make mix decisions on them that don't completely fall apart elsewhere. I don't think there is a better multi-purpose phone and certainly not for the money.

I would recommend the akg 271 mk II!
Very good and neutral sounding Headphones and the industry standart,in a way.

I prefer and got used to the ATH-M30's I had the M50's and returned them after a couple of days. They seemed to hyped... Maybe I needed more burn in time on them.
