i use GTR for fx's, and seems to me it does it's job pretty well, but not for high gain stuff, just for the... random effects...chorus, delays, stuff like that

I don`t recommend for high gain stuff ...in my opinion it`s useless for that, but you can dial in some interesting sounds with the effects.
If you are looking for the hi gain stuff, the best plugins are the free ones, try them all boosted with a TS plugin in front and some good impulses, and if you like them don`t forget to donate to the developers

You used to get Waves GTR Solo for free from their website as a 1 year working fully working "demo". And it's only $18 on their website

I use A3 and I like it for high gain sounds, especially the Randall amp. But I also like the free stuff too. And as good as possible cabimpulses. Redwirez are the best. Period.

Ah i forgot. And Ignite amps, i love the amp for melodeath style stuff.
