weird noise

hey guys,

so i recently fired up my second rig that i hadn't used in a while (a PC with an m-audio 24/96 pci card), and it seems to have a strange kind of noise problem:

whenever i touch the guitar (ibanez RG with EMGs), i get hiss, but the weird thing is its not there if i try to record it.
however when i mute the guitar track and touch the guitar, its there.
it also still appears when i turn the volume knob on the guitar down.
its kind of like the inverse thing of what happens when the guitar isn't properly grounded, but i have no explaination for this.

anyone else have encountered this?

Cannot help the OP. Do you have a limiter set on your master or guitar chain, or a compressor with extreme settings, by chance?

no limiter or extreme compression, when i do that or increase the gain i turn up the "regular" noise, but the noise im talking about seems to be independent from it.

i had the chance to make some tests with interchanging all the components in my chain, the funny thing is whatever component i change, the noise would always disappear.
so since the headphone amp im using (i can only use headphones at the place im staying atm) is a crappy 20$ behringer, im just gonna replace that.

You've tried a different guitar?

What if you bypass the headphone amp and run the headphone or Line Out of your interface?

yeah, changing the guitar didn't make the noise stop, but changing/bypassing the pre, the interface, or the headphone amp all made it go away

Hmm. Wiring or electrical issue in your studio, maybe? Are all the units plugged into the same circuit or separate?

all the same circuit, but thats probably it, i had the exact configuration at another place and it didn't give me any issues
