Symbolic doesn't quite work for me for trips... too emotional I guess.
Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Nevermore, Helloween, those always work. Iron Fuckin Maiden, of course. Old school always works best.

Samplers never grow stale on trips. I can take almost all samplers on a trip and be happy. I.E., Identity 6 & 7, BW & BK's Knuckletracks CDs, etc.

np - Nocturnal Rites - The Sinner's Cross - The Anthem spewed from the chaotic, fiery mouth of hell.

Candlemass- Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Slayer- Reign n Blood
My Dying Bride - The Angel And The Dark River
Nevermore- POE
Solitude Aeturnus - Downfall (LOL)
Morgana Lefay/Lefay- which ever

umm, that should do... for me. :)

Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Opeth - Still Life
Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy
In Flames - Jester Race
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin

You definitely need some Ozric Tentacles to balance out the metal....they still give you a lot of good guitar playing, but they also add some space and trippiness into the mix and they've been great companions for me on many a long road trip!
