What do you guys think about piracy?

As someone who (more or less successfully) has run a record label for the past 10 years I´ll say this. Filesharing is great. I see people downloading my albums the same as those who listen to them in record stores. If they like something enough they will buy it. It´s a great way to reach a huge audience rather cheap and every loss that might be because of people just burning a CDR is compensated by the money I save by direct marketing and because I basically advertise for free.

All that whining about evil filesharing is because encrusted structures of the music industry can´t adjust to reality. It´s time for the old dinosaurs to die. Do not believe the lies of the music industry.

Right on! :headbang:
The ones who wouldn't buy the CD don't care if they obtained the album from the net or by copying someone else's original CD.
And that shit about CD protection really gets on my nerves...
They expect me to pay my honestly earned buck for something I can't make a copy for my car stereo (which I'm legally entitled to) and for something that isn't an audio CD by the book, after all, and has sound degradation.
It may not be so obvious, but I hate knowing that I pay the same price for the ruined CD and the normal one.

I agree with Bryant because my thoughts on the subject are the same. There is so much crap to wade through out there that if I bought it all just to see if I would like it, I would be in so much debt by now. Good music is not meant to remain on MP3. I have to have the real thing, to play it loud, look at the lyrics sheet / artwork and be able to take it everywhere. I have 20 GB worth of MP3s on my computer and I don´t feel guilty or bad or like I am cheating the artists. Most of it is either mainstream Metal bands that sell millions of copies of their albums and don´t notice or stuff that is out of print or very hard to find.

I used to dload like crazy, but my computer ran out of space and the dloading programs raped it. So I had to stop. But yeah, if I like a band, I'll ussually buy their albums, but I'll most likely buy one per band cuz I'm don't have a lot of money. I'll also probably burn it if someone in my family has it, and they've got a lot of good stuff.

I'm in favor as long is against pop (hip-hop, rap, dance, trance, etc.) artists

But it's keeping Britney from making another million :(

I've became a fan of a lot of bands by downloading their music, then bought the albums - not of ALL of them tho, I'll be honest.

To me it boils down to this:

Metal fans, for the most part, use downloading as a "try before you buy" thing, and if they like what they hear will generally buy the CD. Metal fans have a lot more loyalty to the bands they support than fickle pop fans. This is the reason there are 30 year old metal bands still around making music today! This is a GOOD thing, heheheh...

Pop fans, being the mindless sheep they are, will simply download and rarely buy the CD... fuck them anyway!

More and more studies are coming out showing that even the supposed MASSIVE downloading that is going on these days has a negligible effect on CD sales. Sales are down because there's more crap, and it costs so much to buy it!

Cheers!

They could solve the problem of "piracy" quite easily by lowering the price of CDs. If all new CDs where only 10 Euros or 9 Euros I would actually be willing to take a gamble and just buy something. But prices of 15 to 17 Euros don´t make me too willing to just take a chance. Despite having the 20 GB we have in our house over 7000 albums so there´s been plenty of support going on here. :)

Sometimes downloaded music is not judged properly. One may listen to something with completely different attitude if he paid for it first. The listener pays more attention to the album and he spends more time focusing on it, while if he downloads it and listens to it while doing other things on the pc he may not listen to it as much (or in the proper way) as it needs.

That's no excuse, you can buy all that OOP and rare albums on eBay. :p

I did/do. I bought Misha Calvin "Evolution I" off of Ebay for $25. I am looking for a CD of Heretic "Breaking Point" as well. I own the cassette and bought it from Ebay.

Rejoice, "The 7th of Never" has just been reissued with "Voice of the Cult" on 1 cd, you can order it here :

As for "Ruler of the Wasteland" it's probably getting rarer but it can still be found. They have some copies left at Hellion Records :

The first thing that came to mind was posting a picture of Running Wild, but it was done as the very first response! You have to be quick around here. I find downloading really useful to hear things - It's like the underground metal radio station that I never had growing up. If I like something, though, and it's been released, I'll buy it. A musician rarely gets paid for anything near the work they do. I'm glad there are so many reissues now, too, because it's a chance for the bands to get heard outside of very expensive collector circles, and get some money that otherwise would just go to people that own the records rather than those that made them. I'm happier owning a legit CD reissue than an expensive original from ebay.
