without a doubt i give the best beginning and end of an album to Nothingfaces' An Audio Guide to Everyday Atrocity. I Break by kata is second beginning and Like Suicide by Soundgarden is my #2 favorite ending track. there are still a billion to choose from though.

hmm maybe:

Pink Floyd's opening on Animals - Pigs On The Wing (Part 1)
and for closing.. :)
Pink Floyd's ending song on Animals too - Pigs On The Wing (Part 2)

:Smokin:

an outstanding album all in all :worship:

Paradise Lost - Paradise Lost

Don't Belong is SUCH a great and catchy song, makes a fantastic opener for the CD. Then the final song "Over The Madness", finishes with a HUGE guitar solo, extremely cool sounding finish to the CD.

Viva emptiness did a really good job too, Inside the City of Glass is an awesome outro

opening:

Ancient Rites - The Return
Primordial - Graven Idol
Katatonia - Brave
Opeth - In Mist She Was Standing
In The Woods... - Yearning The Seeds Of A New Dimension
Orphaned Land - Birth Of The Three
My Dying Bride - The Cry Of Mankind
Nevermore - Born

closing:

Hollenthon - Eclipse (Vita Nova)
Hollenthon - Conspirator
Opeth - Epilogue
Katatonia - Inside The City Of Glass
Madder Mortem - Re-Sonatine
Madder Mortem - Hangman
In The Woods... - Omnio
Emperor - Inno A Satana

Opening:

Sentenced - Konevitsan Kirkonkellot, The Gate/Noose, When the Moment Of Death Arrives
Bloodbath - Ways To the Grave
Type O Negative - Love You To Death (though not the start of the album, it is the first song)
Opeth - In Mist She Was Standing
Entombed - Left Hand Path
The Gathering - On Most Surfaces
Katatonia - Ghost Of the Sun
Moonspell - Darkness and Hope, Wolfshade
Halford - Resurrection
Bathory - Hades
Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare

Closing:

Sentenced - Mourn, I'll Throw the First Rock
Bloodbath - Cry My Name, Blood Vortex, Furnace Funeral
Katatonia - Inside the City Of Glass
Opeth - Blackwater Park
The Black League - Night On Earth
Tiamat - A Pocket Size Sun
Type O Negative - Haunted (again, though not the last track, it is the last song on the album)
WASP - The Great Misconceptions Of Me

From what I can remember right now for opening it really surprised me Meshuggah - Shed, with all theese screaming at the first of the song, it's so sudden, even If you have already heard the song. Also, Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes (No need to explain) and 3 - Alien Angel. For ending, Funeral For A Friend - Escape Artists Never Die.

Theese songs aren't anything great, but it's what I have in mind now

I can't believe that Dispossession hasn't been mentioned yet. That's one of my all-time favorite songs.

Closing: Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine

Another closing song isn't required in the world.

Interesting thread. I'm especially gonna focus on good intros and outros, and just songs that do really well in opening (preferably real into-your-face songs) /closing an album

opening:
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Channel Zero - Black Fuel
Anathema - Shroud of False
Machine Head - Imperium
Ancient Rites - Avondland
My Dying Bride - Cry of Mankind
Death - Symbolic
Sepultura - Arise
Diabolical Masquerade - Rider on the Bonez
Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time
Slayer - Angel of Death
Sons of Jonathas - Final Call

closing:
Anathema - Violence
Hypocrisy - The Final Chapter
Metallica - Damage Inc.
Metallica - The Outlaw Torn (yeah go and kill me)
My Dying Bride - For my Fallen Angel
Slayer - Raining Blood

Anathema - Shroud of False
Definately!! It sets the mood for the intire album (since it's a quite depressive album this song really smacks you in the face)
another good opening song is Born by Nevermore
as for closing songs I'd have to pick Journey through pressure (katatonia of course)
(oh god, the new album is so good! I'm gonna listen to it again)
:)

Openers:
Anathema - Shroud of False (just a beautiful opening to a great album)
Cult of Luna - Echoes (the intro is just incredible)
Death - Flattening of Emotions (those pedals in the beginning are classic)
Dismember - Override of The Overture (one of the most classic Sunlight-riffs opens up what is possibly the best CD from that period)
Draconian - A Scenery of Loss (almost forgot this gem of a song)
Forgotten Tomb - Entombed By Winter (an incredibly cold way to open up an extremely frosty album)
Nevermore - Born (opens up TGE with a big bang)
Nevermore - Ophidian/Beyond Within (gets the blood pumping)
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure (just such an extremely powerful song, and the drum intro fits perfectly in the context)
The Crown - Death Explosion (such a killer up-tempo song that sets the mood for the entire Deathrace)

Closers:
Bloodbath - Cry My Name (such a blood-churning, amazing song with just the right mood to end the album)
Dismember - Dreaming In Red (pretty much the same as Cry My Name)
Katatonia - Distrust (such a defeated, emotional song. great ending to DO)
Katatonia - Don't Tell A Soul (just such a great song. undeniably catchy and lyrically perfect in its simplicity)
My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel (this one always gives me chills)
Nevermore - Forever (a great ending interlude full of emotion)
Nevermore - The Learning (my all-time favourite song as well as a great epic closer)
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor (a killer song to end a killer album)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (I really fail to enjoy this album these days. but the title track is just outright brilliant. Insane growls by mikael)
The Crown - Killing Star (insanely rocking as well as a fitting closer)
The Haunted - My Shadow (the incredible result of letting Peter Dolving go creative in the band. best song ever from this band)

NP: Nightingale - Scarred for Life

Great taste Stefan. :)
"Human" is my fav Death record and my fave line-up. This opening with the double bass and tom rolls is excellent and somewhat unique.

I'd say the best Katatonia opener is 'For my Demons', this song is fucking divine. Their best closer is 'Don't Tell A Soul' in my opinion.

The best opener of all time is 'Enchantment' by Paradise Lost, and 'Jaded', the closer of Draconian Times, is the best of all time.
