The situation is this:

I've applied to at least two different universities (in reality 4 different, but I very much doubt I'm not going to get accepted to one of my first choices): Piteå and Luleå. Now them shitz in Piteå is REALLY HARD to get into (10.5 applicants for every accepted student,) and I did the entrance exam as you might remember; they said they would send out invitations for interviews for the 30 best from the 150+ who did the test around the 5th of June. Now it's the 7th and I haven't received a call to interview.

So I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get into my second choice in Luleå. However, here's where things get tricky. I am trying to find a place to live in Luleå, and there are plenty of options for students there still -- but as I would go fucking insane living in a dormitory with shared kitchen/shower and/or have a roommate, I need to have an apartment with my own bathroom and means of cookin' food.

These are available in fair abundance, and I have registered on the Interweb and had one reserved for me, BUT if I want that I must say 'yes' no later than tomorrow (the 8th) and receive contracts and shit. Now the problem is that if I do this, I will have secured a place in Luleå, BUT there is the remote possibility that I will be accepted for Piteå, in which case I'll look real stupid with a contract signed for an apartment in Luleå. Now if I DON'T do this, I run the chance of waiting too long and all the good apartments being gone by the time I know what university accepts me.

WHAT TO DO!

In the US, lease agreements are binding and you have no choice but to pay rent or go to court, so I wouldn't sign anything unless you plan on living there. Or paying someone else to live there. :loco:

How far is it from Luleå to Piteå? Could you commute if need be? If not, I'd just suck it up and bunk with a fat disgusting christian slob and get an apartment later.

I just figured out what to do. I'm going to call up the university in Piteå and see if they intend to send me to an interview; if not, I'm getting that apartment

I think

About 5 metric miles? I don't have a car or anything though so it would be a real fucking nuisance.

Well if you don't face going to court if you bail on the apartment, just tell 'em you don't want their skanky shithole after all if you end up going to the other place...

I would just wait. There will be other apartments. In my 3rd year, I transfered really late and all the college housing was gone, but then I discovered they have this emergency housing for 'special cases' -- like overseas students that didn't get a chance to grab some dorm unit -- and these places turn out to be like small palaces!! I ended up in one of those with 3 other guys, but it was ok because we were near the hospital college SO ALL THE NURSES LIVED DOWN OUR STREET!!! ANNDDDD, WE LIVED OPPOSITE A PUB! :tickled:

Seriously, there was an old Aussie ad on TV back then where some fellow gets lost in the aussie desert and ends up near a pub and says "I can see the pub from here", and every morning, one of us would look out the window and say the exact same thing...and the joke would never get old!! Guiness for breakfast is perfect. Fried egg sandwiches and guinness....the breakfast for kings.

Also, although I agree with not wanting to share bathrooms and kitchens etc, living in dorms is quite fun. It's noisy and messy, but it's a party everynight. But if you're looking for something more private, then at least try to stay on campus (or very close) because campus bars is where all the student chicks hangout. And first year chicks are the best because they're like "oh I really shouldn't, I mean, I'm a good girl....but my boyfriend and parents are 300 miles away...oh what the hell". Second year chicks are even better because they're just first year chicks x 2. Final year chicks is when they become feminists ready for the real world and grow their hairy armpits out and turn lesbo, in a butch kind of way, not sexy porn in stilletos way.

[/most useless post in all history]

I found living in a dorm pretty fun actually, but we had like 24 people (an unusually large number) sharing the communal areas (obviously they were pretty big) so it was easy to avoid people you didn't like. But I guess it's not for some people. However if you end up with some cool people, then like JayK said, it's fun all the way. It depends if you actually want to meet people and make friends. If so, it's worth the annoyance of having to share kitchens and bathrooms, and I wouldn't have wanted to do anything else in my first year. Not that you're going to do this anyway, just thought I'd offer my input!

I totally agree though about having to share a room with someone, no fucking way could I do that. As far as I understand, that's pretty much the norm in America isn't it? FUCK THAT. No universities do that here, and thank fuck.

OMG only 2 weeks of university life left for me

Wow you Euros/Scanners really hate living with other people. I think dorms are chill, and roomates are cool to dude.

dorms are a good way to meet people if you don't know many people going in, and they can be fun, especially if you have a lot of friends right in your hall like i do :Spin:

i don't mind having a roommate either during the year...but i'm home with my parents for the summer now and it is kinda nice to have my own space and be able to crank up the amp when nobody's home :headbang:

THink of the upside of living with a fat christian peice of shit.... you can SCARE him out of the apartment... the trick is to act REALLY REALLY evil around him,b ut not do anything wrong... find an artsy fartsy friend to make you some fake book covers that look really satanic/evil and sit there reading regular books with these on.... I use it on the bus when fat people sit next to me and their rolls start enveloping my leg like some sort of carnivorous ooze.

Loud darkthrone works well for that too :p

You shouldn't be so sure, as you're most probably going to fail your chemistry paper. Don't be so optimistic :p

What would I have done? I would've asked for advice from my parents. I know, it might sound insane to seek advice from your own family - not only do they know you better than persons you've "met" on an Internet forum, and they've also got life experience to share - but try it.

Irony aside, I would've gone for the first option - cause, let's face it, you won't get into Piteå Uni (this is judging by your small review of your audition, which you said didn't go very well).

Yours,

Dr Main

I haven't failed chemistry, though I would if I had followed the advice your dumb friends gave

:p

It was from a forum, the chemistry friend didn't want to send you his answer because he thought it was incorrect. I think the whole thing is a result of language barriers, though.

dorms are a crap shoot. you can get really cool roommates or real assholes. my very first roommate was a black dude who moved out after only one week because he wanted to move in with this other black dude..., so I got the 2nd floor two person room with balcony all to myself. dorm balconies rule because you can sit out in the air and drink beer and check out the girls, ahhhhhhhhhhh higher learning.
