Yes, it's time for that end of year retrospective stuff we all love to hate but do anyways!

Anyways, what albums/bands grabbed your attention in 2002, i.e. what spent a lot of time in your CD player, etc.? Note that if you just discovered some old band that released the album years ago, that still counts for the purposes of this thread.

Here goes!

Stuart Hamm - Outbound
I have always loved Stu's work, and very much enjoy his solo projects!

Dragonspoon
Frank Aresti (former Fates Warning guitarist) just put this album out, and I really like it. Everything (drums, bass, etc.) except the guitar work is done electronically (in a very good way), giving the album an industrial feel while still focusing on Frank's guitar work and songwriting style, and his prog metal influences.

The Gathering (Mandylion, Nighttime Birds, How To Measure A Planet, If-Then-Else)
What can I say, I heard them once, bought an album, and now really like this band!

Engine - Superholic
I really like Ray's voice and Bernie's guitar work. The nu metal sound is explored and completely stood on it's head as Bernie shows off his skill (something a lot of NuMetal bands never do). This isn't Nu-Metal (these guys remember their Heavy/Prog metal roots and aren't afraid to show it!), but fits the genre very well (too bad it doesn't get much airplay).

Geoff Tate - Geoff Tate
This album has really struck a chord with me. Just good melody, interesting mood shifts, and of course Geoff's awesome voice. Interesting lyrics too! And one song features an acoustic bass (or viola or something), something Wanda should hear...

Vinnie Moore - Defying Gravity
I've been a fan since Mind's Eye, and Vinnie hasn't dissapointed me yet!

Oh, STILL stuck on Gordian Knot (bought it at the end of last year - it still intrigues me...)

I've bought a few other albums this year too, but those are the ones that are getting a lot of play these days...

From this year (not in any order):

Björk - Greatest Hits
Halford - The Crucible
Venom - Remastered CD Catalog (It's about fucking time!)
Iron Maiden - Rock In Rio
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs For the Deaf (You can't even hear it!)
Einstürzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architechture Vol. 3 1990 - 2000
The Apex Theory - Topsy Turvy

And, not from this year, but still constant favorites (also not in any order):

Tool - Lateralus
Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets
Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay
Deep Purple - Live in Japan (3 CD set of all performances that made up the Made In Japan album.)
Slayer - Reign In Blood

soilwork - natural born chaos
in flames - reroute to remain
dark tranquility - damage done
arch enemy - wages of sin

nah, i don't like swedish melodic death metal.....

lacuna coil - comalies
sinergy - suicide by my side
the donnas - spend the night
pearl jam - riot act

thats all i can think of for now

1. George Harrison - Brainwashed
Great album. Maybe his best solo.
2. Bionic - Deliverance
Great album / band out of Ontario, Canada. Their first album rules too.
3. Racer X - Live at the Whisky Snowball of Doom (DVD)
This is amazing. Racer X is definately back!
4. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs For the Deaf
This album kicks, I like these guys.
5. Iron Maiden - Beast Over Hammersmith (Eddie's Archive)
What a gem this one was!
6. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - The Last DJ
Tom rules! Mike Campbell is the shit on guitar.
7. Motörhead - Hammered
Classic. I like just about everything the've put out.
8. Seven Nations - and now its come to this
Celtic Rock band. Amazing live.

10.Sinergy-Suicide by my Side
9.Shadows Fall-The Art of Balance
8.Norther-Dreams of Endless War
7.Agalloch-The Mantle
6.Opeth-Deliverance
5.In Flames-Reroute to Remain
4.Thyrfing-Vasinnesvisor
3.Insomnium-In the Halls of Awaiting
2.Dark Tranquillity-Damage Done
1.Blind Guardian-A Night at the Opera

Queens of the Stone Age - "Songs for the Deaf"
Audioslave - "Audioslave"
Res - "How I Do"
System of a Down - "Steal This Album"
Weezer - "Maladroit"
Aerosmith - "O yeah, Ultimate Aerosmith Hits" (is this already out of print?)

Thumbs up for the new Pearl Jam and Tom Petty. The new Bowie, Bjork, and Stevie Wonder compilations kick ass too.

I regretfully have to say that I was highly disappointed with the new Foo Fighters. At least QOTSA heavily made up for it.
