What would you LIKE to see become the next metal genre?

more folk crossovers. they already exist, but I like folky influence, but not totally folk as the flutes and shit do get a little corny. IE more blackened folk, post folk, prog folk, etc.

Progressive thrash metal with significant early 90's DOS-era video game soundtrack influence. No gay telele keyboard stuff, but a darker and bass-centric MIDI inspiration. There's some Anacrusis stuff that hits it for short time (the synth bass things in the middle of Stop Me, the verses of Sound the Alarm) but I want it fully utilized.

Actually dark metal is more commonly used to refer to the Agalloch-esque bands like Woods of Ypres and October Falls than to the DSBM bands like Bethlehem. Bethlehem just coined the phrase.

I hope genres regress and not progress. I think they're pretty ridiculous already; especially the names.

Hot girl at a bar: 'Oh, what kind of music do you listen to?'

Metal head: 'Cobra Core and Sludge Crust'

/conversation.

Just some really dark metal with bagpipes, I think it'd sound really badass. Kinda like a mix with black and folk metal.

Well I kind of want more extreme metal with only clean vocals as I'll be in the mood to listen to it more often that that with harsh vocals.

Less of that drum sound that's predominant in brutal death metal and more of the Nightfall era Candlemass one.

More hot chicks.

but more to the point, for an actual genre or movement, if some bands took element of the apparently polar traditional doom and power metal genres and added intelligent perhaps philosophical lyrics then it might be cool. It could also just be straight heavy metal.

Yea, I think doom's boundaries can be pushed a little more, considering monumental releases like The Maniacal Vale and The Monad Of Creation are fairly recent.

I'd like to see extreme metal bands that are not annoying as fuck.

Welcome to the world of Bethlehem.

Actually, I've mostly heard it applied to some of Rotting Christ's stuff that clearly isn't black metal. Whatever it is, all good stuff.

Man, I do not know what the fuck dark metal is supposed to be. I've seen that term used in a couple different ways over the years and the definitions people offer are usually so vague. It's not as bad as "speed metal" though, which has like 5 gazillion different definitions.
