i just got a 700 square foot apartment for $595. no, it's not and shithole and the neighborhood is safe.

It costs about the same to rent a small to medium sized house in Stamford, CT and get a monthly train pass to get to Manhattan. It's a surprise to see Connecticut real estate being cheaper for once (right next to Greenwich too)
