I had the pleasure of speaking with both López and Méndez and as a Hispanic I did let them know how proud we are to have a representation of our culture and heritage in such a high profile METAL band. Of course I told them in our native language, Spanish.

So how about someone who knows answers my question: When and why did they move to Sweden and now do they both speak Swedish/English? What language do they use to communicate with the other Opeth guys?

I'm from Spain and I talked with them in Spanish after thier show in Bilbao. I remember one of the Martin's tell something to Mike and i think he used Swedish, though i'm not sure because i don´t know nothing about that language. But i'm pretty sure he didn't use English.
ABout the first question I asked them and I think Mendez moved to Sweden when he was 13-14 or something like that. About Lopez I think he has been living in Sweden since he was younger. I don't know if the dates are very accurate but the show was a year ago and maybe I forgot something.

I'm a 3 post, at present, mother fucker and I talked to Mikael Åkerfeldt for a short while in Cleveland.
It's no enormous feat really....just go to an Opeth show then either before or after the show approach them and start conversing. They're all very nice people and will not punch you in the head or tell you to fuck off for "bothering" them.
