New to forum as I am, I browse the threads and find this! Now I got a Q for all you Opeth-heads out there, With what album should I begin my collection? Any cross-connections to other bands that are interesting?
Greetings!

I first got into them with Blackwater Park, but my favourite album is Still Life. Both of those are great to start off your collection.

Ghost Reveries, Still Life, MAYH, Damnation (if you want soft music)

Also check out these for other things Mikael has been involved with:
Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage, Breeding Death
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day, Sounds of Decay
Edge of Sanity - Crimson

Oh yeah, forgot about that bit. Yeah, they're some awesome recommendations. Crimson especially kicks arse.

No, no. You need to be eased into Opeth. Get Blackwater Park first. Then Still Life. Then MAYH. Then, it really doesn't matter.

*yawn*

would have been more helpful if threadstarter had mentioned what songs he's heard and what other bands he likes.

If you haven't listened to much DM before I'd recommend Damnation but if you're a seasoned listener it doesn't really matter. I just downloaded a lot of their songs to begin with, sussing out which ones I liked best, then I bought the albums they were off hoping the rest of the album was something similar. Worked for me. Good luck mate;)

Get Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park first. Then Still life and My arms, your hearse. Then Damnation and Deliverance. Then Orchid and Morningrise.

Then get deadwing by Porcupine Tree.

Oh yeah you asked for cross connections with other bands?

Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) produced Blackwater Park, Damnation and Deliverance (and co-wrote Death Whispered A Lullaby with Mikael). He contributed vocals in that song and in Bleak (some others too but I can't remember off the top of my head). Mikael in turn played guitar on Porcupine Tree's album Deadwing, along with some backing vocals.

Opeth and Katatonia also are close friends. But instead of me typing allthis out go to Opeth's homepage and look around for the page that lists their involvements with other bands.

Blackwater Park, while not my favorite album, does a fantastic job of introducing the band. I'd say starting there and then work both backwards and forwards at the same time! Yes!

Get Still Life, then get Deliverance. Get My Arms, Your Hearse, then get Damnation. Get Morningrise, then get Ghost Reveries. Get Orchid, and then...uh, hopefully your hooked by then so go get the live DVD Lamentations.
