I've been interested in getting into some Opeth. Strangely enough I've never heard anything by the band before. Can you guys recommend the best album to start with?

My Arms Your Hearse
Still Life
one of those. probably mayh.

You can trust me because I'm not one of these asshole opeth-discussers that clogs up every thread with "no ghost reveries is better" crap.

Speaking of which, Ghost Reveries is crap. Don't get it.

Yeah both Still Day Beneath The Sun and Patterns In The Ivy II are incredible. Shows a musical sofistication that metal doesn't really have, sounds like something Nick Drake would come up with.

Thanks guys, judging by most reponses I'm guessing Blackwater park may be the best place to start. I think I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Opeth are what I like to call a Fibonacci band. The only way to truly understand them is to listen to their albums in the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13. All albums not falling within this sequence are shit and can safely be ignored. Of course they haven't put out their 13th release yet but when they do it will surely kick ass.

I got into Opeth through Blackwater Park in their popularity explosion back in 01. It's a pretty good starting point and is almost as good as My Arms and Still Life. These days I only listen to their first two albums.

Ghost Reveries is by no means crap and one of their best albums. Watershed is their best album imo.

Listen to their albums in chronological order, but stop after the second one.
