Where to start with Opeth

i highly recommend MAYH, which is by far my avourite Opeth album. SL and Orchid are also great to start with.

You haven't been here very long, apparently. Start a thread about any band, it WILL get trolled. Hell... don't even make it about a band... just start a thread, it'll get trolled. That's half the fun of this place.

Well, I bought Blackwater Park yesterday because that seemed to be what most people on page 1 were suggesting. I haven't listened to it yet though.

Oh I will give it a few more listens, but my first impression was that most of the songs were extremely boring and ran too long.

Hmmmmmm. The Opener and ender on Blackwater Park are both incredable - though even I admit the quiet section in the middle of BWP is too long. The Leper Affinity is long but switches around enough between enough awesome riffs that it makes up for it. Personally they might be long but I've never found BWP boring - except Dirge for November but that probably Opeth's worst song. Mike's voice is awesome all over that album

I for one have a hard time with early Opeth. I dont know what it is. I put some of their early stuff on and always think "why did I not like this, this is awesome". By the end of the album Im so tired of it that I dont listen to it again for lots and lots of months. I cant put my finger on what it is its just something that bores me.

However from Blackwater Park and onwards I eally like this band and I dont grow tired of it at all. I actually think their latest release "watershed" is the one I like the very best at the moment.
