I honestly think that if your tone is bad, the strings aren't the first thing i'd complain about.

He didn't say his tone was bad.... He said he didn't like the tone of d'addario strings. I don't like them either.
I prefer Ernie balls.
Anyways I'm currently using LaBella Crazy 8's as they're the only set I can find in a reasonable gauge set.
They're not too bad. I like them over the d'addarios.

D'Addario is probably the most used string brand for people around here. I doubt they are the problem. I wouldn't buy prepackaged 8 string (or even 7 string) sets though... the tension differences between strings are all over the place. I order from www.juststrings.com and get a 9-42 set + a 60 for the 7th string + an 80 for the 8th string...
