Everything in those novels is approved by one of Lucas companies. Lucas himself even used stuff that was invented in the novels, like Coruscant.

Well, there are different levels of 'official' for Star Wars. It isn't 'canon' (i.e. only the films), but it's 'official', meaning that Lucas officially recognizes it as part of the story. Most of the novels are 'official', like the Episode 7-9 novels by Timothy Zhan. Contrary to some weird recent rumors, Lucas never had more than 6 episodes in mind.
