I've realized there have been a lot of great solo artists over the years, usually it's been a bit of a joke when artists go solo from a great band.

When I think of great solo artists, I think of the easy ones like Ozzy, Dio and Danzig first, maybe Abbath too. What solo artists do you love just as much or almost as much as their bands?

The Chemical Wedding is about as good as Dickinson's first three with Maiden on average, and better than anything after Powerslave.

Sebastian Bach is better solo than Skid Row is without him. But that is in no way praise for Sebbie.

I wouldn't characterize it the way you did, but The Chemical Wedding is phenomenal. Balls to Picasso is pretty good, but a couple of subpar tracks drag it back a bit.

Ihsahn is solid. Several of the Emperor tracks I like better, but for overall consistency I like Ihsahn better, especially his past couple of albums.
