Me too Tee. I feel like the entire music insults my IQ somehow, and within 5 minutes no one can stop me from reaching to the 'power' button on the stereo.... :yuk:

I really think - and some Power fans here are going to jump on me for this - that it's because it's SO formulaic that it turns people off. There are a few bands that have successfully written albums I like (Kamelot comes to mind), but let's face it: Stratovarius have been doing the same three songs for at least ten years now, and there are 1000 other bands doing the same thing. Instead of diversifying, this entire genre seems to be coalescing - or maybe congealing is a better word - into a shapeless mass of cliche.

I blame HammerFall, but that's just because I like to blame HammerFall for everything.

I actually think the genre has been expanding and evolving a bit as of late. Bands like Angra, Wuthering Heights, Adagio, seem to be gaining more popularity and breaking out of the mold more. But if you look at the last 10+ years of power metal (especially European) you can definitely see the rampant mediocrity.

Hmm. I like the last couple of Angra albums, but they're hardly as diverse as "Holy Land". Adagio has at least started to shed their Symphony X clone status, but Wuthering Heights make me want to vomit. Sorry.

Oddly, though, I kinda like Cellador. Which is strange, since I hate DragonForce.

Cellador write much better songs imo, even with there craziness. Wuthering Heights may make you want to vomit, but you really cant say they sound like to many other bands out there right now. Im guessing you dont like much folk influenced metal :D. "Holy Land" is probably the most diverse but the songs on the last two albums have just been better written in my opinion. And the only Adagio I've heard is the latest- "Dominate" so I cant really say what the previous albums sounded like.

I think that's the key, actually. So much of what I hear has nothing to do with songwriting, and everything to do with image. It's like hair metal.

They've definitely evolved, but I think their writing is really lacking - I like other folk-influenced stuff, but they actually annoy me. I'm sure that's a minority opinion, though.

Adagio's first disc was total Sym X worship. The second was a little less, and the newest has less still. I don't really think of them as what most people think of when you say "Power Metal", though.
