Who's the biggest power metal freak here ?

I think that's the key, actually. So much of what I hear has nothing to do with songwriting, and everything to do with image. It's like hair metal.

Yea we were actually going to try to open for them at Jaxx, but of course those lucky bastards from Engage got on it before us.

They've definitely evolved, but I think their writing is really lacking - I like other folk-influenced stuff, but they actually annoy me. I'm sure that's a minority opinion, though.

I dunno, I think alot of people are still on the fence with them from what I've seen. Its definitely a matter of personal taste though. I dont like alot of the bands that have similar elements as WH (such as Elvenking), but I dont really find them cheesy. I thought there last album was a hugh leap forward and really merged a gap between power and folk for them.

Adagio's first disc was total Sym X worship. The second was a little less, and the newest has less still. I don't really think of them as what most people think of when you say "Power Metal", though.

thats true, they really have much more diverse elements in the music.

It's really simple, power metal makes money, and market forces determine how many bands the market can support. It's big everywhere but the US...but even then you see it growing in popularity here. and it's obviously quite a few, cause there are dozens of mediocre PM bands out there who drag down the whole genre. but music has always been that way, anyone remember grunge? suddenly there were 5000 bands wearing flannel.

I really think - and some Power fans here are going to jump on me for this - that it's because it's SO formulaic that it turns people off. There are a few bands that have successfully written albums I like (Kamelot comes to mind), but let's face it: Stratovarius have been doing the same three songs for at least ten years now, and there are 1000 other bands doing the same thing. Instead of diversifying, this entire genre seems to be coalescing - or maybe congealing is a better word - into a shapeless mass of cliche.

I blame HammerFall, but that's just because I like to blame HammerFall for everything.
The same could be said about any metal genre truthfully. Every genre gets generic over the course of time.
As for Cellador. That band is so unoriginal. Decent though.
And Adagio has gotten really good. Sanctus Ignis especially stands out because of the work Richard Anderson put in. Check out Time Requiem and Majestic.

precisely the reason i cant stand it. you can listen to a powermetal song you've never heard and predict exactly whats coming next. its absurd. i get pissed off becuase there are some really awesome shredders that are wasting their talent playing the same old crap from 15 years ago or longer. and the LYRICS :Puke:

Vanden Plas is great. really great. they completely destroy modern Dream Theater. but they're proggy, not PM.

Their singer gets to me after a while - I like high voices, but he gets whiny too much - but they music is pretty good, especially on "The God Thing". They were enjoyable live, too.

he's way less pretentious than Labrie. dude PM me an email addy and I'll try to send you a couple tracks tomorrow. I can't get to Yousnuffit from work

I'd agree, he's less whiny than LaBrie (with the exception of I&W). I have a low tolerance for whine - about half of the power metal singers out there drive me up the wall (Andy Franck comes to mind....)
