Why did Jonas stop growling?

Get off my putty bastard!
Whatever was the deal with Jonas not growling anymore. I know they eventually changed their direction and didn't need them anymore, but why did they have Mike Akerfeldt growl on Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay? I heard a rumor that he had problems with his voice and couldn't growl anymore, but now I've heard from several sources that he still growls live. Was his "injury" just a temporary thing or was there another reason. I definitely think the clean singing is an improvement, but I'd like to get the facts straight.

He did hurt himself with growling. There was the rumour flying around that he couldn't speak for a while, but I'm pretty sure I remember Anders saying that wasn't true. I think he just lost the ability to growl for a while, or was ordered by his doctor not to ;). His throat is all better now, Katatonia just don't think growling is satisfactory for their music anymore (doesn't convey enough emotion, which I disagree with, but oh well, that's why they are great and noone's heard of me... :D).

as far as i can remember Anders and Jonas growl live, but its only like one song ('Murder' usually although they have played 'Endtime' too) anyway i've never been so happy to see that he quit growling, i love the old albums, but i love the new ones too, im just happy how everything turned out.

Apparently Jonas didn't have the correct technique for growling. It was ruining his throat, bit by bit.

Guys like Akerfeldt and AG Jensen from Saturnus have it down pat and could probably do it all day!

Personally I think Katatonia are best without the growls... although many disagree.

Or Arch Enemy :headbang:

But you mean females that can't growl, right? Yeah. At university, me and one of the other guitarists (I studied music) used to growl all the time, in conversations, and as greetings, y'know- walk into a room, see a couple of friends and let rip with a "Owen" and a "Gareth" in growls. Anyway, one of the flute players, Julie, used to find this pretty funny (which it was) and she'd try and do it back when we did it to her- it was kinda half-choked and didn't sound at all good

Depends on weather you want to hurt your throat or not ;)

It's just like normal singing, it's less stressful on your throat if you breath properly and project from the diaphragm (bottom of the lungs), rather than taking shallow breaths and forcing it out....

jonas´ singing (or growling...) on "for funerals to come..." is one of the best i ever listened to and fits perfectly to the music! i think they made a big fault in letting the opeth guy sing on "brave murder day" and "sounds of decay". i guess with jonas´voice i´d have loved the album...but actually i don´t like it. anyway the nu stuff with clean vocals sucks! :(
