Why is being open-minded considered generally a good thing?

Really? Especially in music? Why is it considered that listening only to metal is a bad thing? Why is liking more or vastly different things considered more sophisticated?

I don't get it, never really got it. I mean, if forcing yourself to listen to as many styles as possible to "stay openminded" sounds kinda dumb to me. I take things at my pace. I decide which genres I check out now and which ones wait. I think this is a very interesting topic, glad you brought it up!

I am kinda open-minded when it comes to music I guess. I like a lot of diffeent styles. I dunno if you would callit open-mindedmess though.

When it comes to total open-mindedness though, I piss in its face. It breeds mediocrity.

i think this applies to anything in life ...not just music ... music is a good starting point though

imo it depends on your reasons for liking something; a lot of people think trying anything once and being completely devoid of all conviction = open-mindedness, which is ridiculous. on the other hand someone who is able to find something to appreciate in a wider variety of things will have a more enjoyable existence. assuming we're talking about artistic open-mindedness. in other fields there are plenty of compelling reasons not to have rigid unchanging views

a poor analogy would be someone who only eats pancakes all the time and thinks people who eat things other than pancakes only do it because they think it makes them "better"

Well. There's a bit of a difference between liking lots of stuff and what you call "total open-mindedness", i.e. trying to see quality in every piece of crap ever and trying to force yourself to listen to stuff you feel you probably won't like.

I mean people are all like "BU WUH HUH THE BEATLES ARE SO GREAT" and I'm like "no, they fucking suck." and they're like "BU WUH HUH YOU HAVENT LISTENED" and I'm like "no, and I do not give a shit" and I won the conversation because I was awesome

personally I don't think i ever "forced" myself to listen to different styles of music ... it just kind of happened over time ... by meeting different people, going to different places, etc. ... you learn to appreciate other styles

LMAO...I see right through your bullshit, and I agree.

I see what you're getting at.

Im getting drunk from my remainders of last night.

I think anyone who refuses to listen to something "on principle" is an idiot (you're the biggest one, Erik :p )

I think anyone who listens to eclectic styles to seem "open-minded" is a jackass (some people say "I like everything"... bullshit)

That said, I'd rather listen to something before I completely damn it to hell. It gives me more ammo (see Celtic Frost thread)

This is where you need to say WHY as well, since this is basically what I was trying to get at. Do you even have good reasons?

I don't force myself to enjoy anything, musical diversity is something entirely natural for me, and while I am generally very open minded concerning music I know there are some genres I could never tolerate and therefore avoid. I see no reason to be dogmatic about any sort of art, but there is such a thing as being too open-minded when it starts to cloud your capacity for judgement. I think imposing restrictions on yourself is far too limiting, and discourages the thrill of discovering great art.
I'm with BWD on the "listen before condemning" thing, if only because it allows for more sensible and/or in-depth bashing.

That's an absolutely gay and lying reason. What if I don't want to "completely damn it to hell", just fucking ignore it because I don't want anything to do with it?

Fine with me

As far as the question in general... my philosophy is "listen to whatever the fuck you like, but never put your fingers over your ears and REFUSE to listen to something you don't think you will enjoy." By the way, I don't think listening regularly to rap, metal, rock, classical, reggae, gaycore, kentucky jive, etc makes someone sophistocated. You are only sophistocated if you have the same playlist as I do
