Why is being open-minded considered generally a good thing?

Look, you're supposed to be better at arguing than this

I am? You gotta get me riled up first. Say "I'll never listen to Genesis because they are gay" or something

Erik said:
As it stands, you're just reinforcing my point that being closed-minded is awesome

Glad to help.
BTW, nice ninja-edit, did you suddenly think that one up?

Sega Genesis > Genesis

and I was always a SNES dude

I've been building my Secret of Mana skills lately, btw

As for thinking, I try not to do it very often, especially when I post here

I finished that game AGAIN a few days ago (with a friend, over the Internet)

BRILLIANT

Can easily run through it in under 10 hours these days

Open-minded people lack substance.

That rings some truth, right there.

Sweet!!! Now i'm insubstantial AND not here!!!  :erk:

lol, i dunno. I'm open minded in that i'll try something, not in that I'll do something I don't want to do or listen to something I don't wantto listen. If I was close minded I wouldn't post on RC, I'd be happy listening to no music.

What you talking about, mr I-listen-to-70s-rock-and-classical-and-sometimes-Nump?

4 years or so ago, I firmly called myself a "metal-head", now when people ask me what I listen to I simply say "good music." That rings truth

I dunno man. lol

EDIT: WTF IS NUMP!?!!!!

EDIT2: Doom, True Metal, Classic Rock, Classical, Folk.....yesss!

i think open-mindedness is good, but its another one of those concepts that the "pc police" have taken too far. you should be open to new music/expereinces/etc. but that doesnt mean you have to like them, or try evey new thing that comes along. i agree that refusing new things on 'principle' is pretty ridiculous and total redneck thinking, but if you walked around trying new things all day you wouldnt have time to enjoy the shit you already like. being openminded doesent mean liking all the weird new shit you try, it just means trying it. i think thats important so you dont get stuck in a rut.

I personally love variety. Routine can just get stale. The same thing applies with my life. I don't like taking the same route to my usual destinations and I hate doing the exact same activities for weeks on end. This includes genres. I've been on an old rock kick with the bands that I loved when I first got into music. I'm listening to Foo Fighter's The Colour & The Shape right now and it fucking ROCKS the house man. Later I might listen to some Current 93 or possibly some Atmosphere. Who knows. Variety is the spice of life.

By the way, just so everyone knows, being "open-minded" and discerning are NOT mutually exclusive.

Love,

B

I think what Erik has a problem with (and definitely what I have a problem with) is not open-mindedness at all, but people judging others based on how "open-minded" they percieve these others to be.

Eg. "You fucking moron, you only listen to metal. Be more open minded."

But maybe I'm wrong, who knows?

Probably yeah. I'm trying to get people like BWD to justify WHY they would say things like
I think anyone who refuses to listen to something "on principle" is an idiot (you're the biggest one, Erik )
because it makes no sense to me.

What! I never called anyone out for not being open-minded! I don't care, really, what other people listen to

EDIT: yes, that is contradictory, get over it
