WINGER (serious thread!)

Winger are fuckin' unreal I reckon.

The debut is a CLASSIC melodic rock album - Madeline, Hungry, Headed For A Heartbreak, Without The Night, Time To Surrendur... fuckin' dynamite tracks!!! The 2nd album is a bit weak overall but has a few killers, and Pull is a really underrated '90s hard rock album. One of the best albums of '93.

I think the only reason people have a problem with Winger is because they look at them from a metal perspective, and obviously as a metal band nobody is gonna like them, because they aren't metal! Who gives a fuck if they are pussies? They ain't a heavy metal band anyway so why do they have to be heavy?

Winger are a MELODIC ROCK band. Good quality classy melodic hard rock with AOR touches here and there. ALL melodic rock bands are pussies! Just listen to Signal, Journey, Treat, Europe, Unruly Child, Bad Habit, Roxus, Stage Dolls, Bad English, Tyketto, Fair Warning, FM, Harem Scarem, etc etc etc. These are the bands Winger's music should be associated with and compared to, not metal bands. And compared to those bands Winger are hardly pussies at all! This stuff is ALL slick, polished, keyboard soaked melodic rock where the lyrics deal with nothing but love, crying, heartbreak, fire & desire & higher type rhyming, etc. It is a whole separate scene of its own with generally a different core audience to the metal audience (though one which does cross over), but Winger just happened to get more exposure in the metal world on Headbangers Ball etc than most of the other AOR/melodic rock bands of the time which I think is why they get slagged off by metalheads for being pussies. But since when is a melodic rock band not meant to be pussies?

And also I don't reckon they had ANYTHING going on image wise! Haha! They looked pretty fuckin' ordinary if you ask me, I mean to me they just had a generic '80s melodic rock look that EVERY band had - poodle hair, shirts, leather pants. Nothing special or over the top at all, and certainly not an image over music kind of thing either. Every band in that era looked like that, it was just the rock look of the time. Just how today's rock look is baggy black pants with wallet chains and goaties. It's no different. It was the glam bands who caked on the lipstick and outrageous hair and hot pink like Pretty Boy Floyd and Poison that were about image if you ask me... (which I love anyway coz I reckon image is MEGA important).

wow i never heard a glam fan actually admit that a certain music or bands are pussies lol as for wallet chains and black pants.. i been wearing such things since the mid 80's.. black pants being denim jeans type ... so i dont think its a today rock look its just a style that never goes out of style... as for the goaties i guess i can agree on that... i have a natural goatee (i actually shave it) because im latin and us latins have it naturally... but as for classifying Winger as a Melodic rock band and not metal i definetly agree with that as well as the bands you named.. to say those bands were ever metal as i have said in the past is incorrect.. i like the term Melodic rock band better or party rock or just plain ole glam rock ...

Yeah I do agree dude. Melodic rock bands ARE pussies compared to metal bands. I mean you wouldn't go around labelling them just as "pussy rock" or something lol but really that genre is soft, light, commercial, keyboardy melodic rock with lyrics that contain the words heart, crying, love, desire, etc non-stop!

That's the kind of music Winger play and they were never trying to be a heavy metal band anyway, but in the late '80s (mainly because of image and guitar styles) there was a very fine line between melodic rock and the commercial metal stuff so whenever a melodic rock band would get big, they would be slagged off by metalheads. Today though, metal has got heavier and melodic rock even more keyboardy so there is a huge difference and they don't get confused anymore. Personally I liked it when there was a fine line because I love the more rockin side of melodic rock stuff (well I love it ALL) and I love the more melodic side of metal so it was great to me when it was all blurred, but I don't think melodic rock bands deserve to be bagged for being pussies or posers when really they weren't trying to be a metal band anyway! And usually the melodic rock bands who were slagged off for that were the heavier melodic rock bands anyway! Why not give shit to Stage Dolls instead? Haha.

Even BETTER said than your prior post. Clear, concise and well-stated.

In my view, Winger is a metal band. But I have a fairly wide umbrella under which I define metal.

I think bands such as Led Zep, Kiss, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses, etc, can easily be classified as metal bands.
In my view, "melodic rock" is more Journey, Foreignor, etc.

It's all about opinion - the arguement could be well-stated on either side of the coin. As long as nobody gets insulted when someone doesn't agree with them, then we're all good to go, right?

I for one - don't classify Led Zep, Kiss, Aerosmith and Guns N Roses as Metal bands - they are Rock bands in my opinion...but again - it's ONLY AN OPINION. And to gove credit where credit is due - G-n-R's "Appetite for Destruction" is one of the best Rock albums ever recorded as far as I'm concerned. I can appreciate music like that - I just don't think it's Metal.

I'm horribly offended that you would even consider getting horribly offended by my statements, so now I want to fight YOU over it. I'll meet you behind the deli and we can throw down to finally settle what bands are metal and what bands aren't... ;)

:D :headbang: :worship: :OMG: :OMG: :worship: :headbang: :D

Jesus H. Christ, not this stupid discussion again. All this ever does is flare up tempers, hurt feelings, and just make things more complicated. I am SO sick of these STUPID "What's metal, what isn't'? I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!!!

So what, exactly, was Jesus' middle name? Hank? Harold?

By the way, Jesus is more metal than Pantera, but not quite as hard-core as Kip Winger. :headbang:

 well, he did sport that long hair and beard like no one else. I always thought his middle name was Horatio. Jesus Horatio Christ.
