Winger are fuckin' unreal I reckon.
The debut is a CLASSIC melodic rock album - Madeline, Hungry, Headed For A Heartbreak, Without The Night, Time To Surrendur... fuckin' dynamite tracks!!! The 2nd album is a bit weak overall but has a few killers, and Pull is a really underrated '90s hard rock album. One of the best albums of '93.
I think the only reason people have a problem with Winger is because they look at them from a metal perspective, and obviously as a metal band nobody is gonna like them, because they aren't metal! Who gives a fuck if they are pussies? They ain't a heavy metal band anyway so why do they have to be heavy?
Winger are a MELODIC ROCK band. Good quality classy melodic hard rock with AOR touches here and there. ALL melodic rock bands are pussies! Just listen to Signal, Journey, Treat, Europe, Unruly Child, Bad Habit, Roxus, Stage Dolls, Bad English, Tyketto, Fair Warning, FM, Harem Scarem, etc etc etc. These are the bands Winger's music should be associated with and compared to, not metal bands. And compared to those bands Winger are hardly pussies at all! This stuff is ALL slick, polished, keyboard soaked melodic rock where the lyrics deal with nothing but love, crying, heartbreak, fire & desire & higher type rhyming, etc. It is a whole separate scene of its own with generally a different core audience to the metal audience (though one which does cross over), but Winger just happened to get more exposure in the metal world on Headbangers Ball etc than most of the other AOR/melodic rock bands of the time which I think is why they get slagged off by metalheads for being pussies. But since when is a melodic rock band not meant to be pussies?
And also I don't reckon they had ANYTHING going on image wise! Haha! They looked pretty fuckin' ordinary if you ask me, I mean to me they just had a generic '80s melodic rock look that EVERY band had - poodle hair, shirts, leather pants. Nothing special or over the top at all, and certainly not an image over music kind of thing either. Every band in that era looked like that, it was just the rock look of the time. Just how today's rock look is baggy black pants with wallet chains and goaties. It's no different. It was the glam bands who caked on the lipstick and outrageous hair and hot pink like Pretty Boy Floyd and Poison that were about image if you ask me... (which I love anyway coz I reckon image is MEGA important).
