WREATH

Hmm, I keep wanting to say it isn't the heaviest, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a song that's more consistently heavy throughout.

My husband votes for DOTF, but it eases up at the end an awful lot imo.
I guess it depends on how one defines "heavy".

Definitely depends...if "heaviest" means "heavy for the whole song" then Wreath wins since it barely has any clean moments. But if "heaviest" implies just the most absolutely brutal or crushing riffage/vocals all in one song...Wreath doesn't win by a longshot compared to Blackwater Park, Heir Apparent, The Grand Conjuration, or Deliverance. The heavy parts in those songs are more brutal than the majority of Wreath, making the existence of clean passages pretty irrelevant unless you're too ADD for a moment of silence. For me, most of the clean passages make the song more heavy by building up suspense (you know around 9:45 of Deliverance, you're thinking "oshit somethin's about to go down"). Wreath's growls are very long and drawn out and half the riffs aren't all that heavy - both the guitars and the vocals are really only heavy in the sense that they're distorted/growled.

^ Agree. The beginning of Deliverance and the middle part are awesomely heavy. So is the end of Karma and the beginning of Master's Apprentice and the beginning of Godhead's Lament, etc, etc. Opeth's songs just have so many dynamic changes that it's difficult to pin the heaviest song overall.

Especially love that middle part in Deliverance when they play it live because they pause a little longer than usual (Edit: The part at 3:12).

how about blackwater park
definitely the most crushing song, half of that song is just building climaxes to smash you in the face, probably my favorite opeth song ever

Wreath is nice underrated song, much like By the pain I see in others, except I like latter better.

I have to listen to those when I get from school.

If you've got the whole Opeth discography on you ipod, and you turn up the volume to the top when you're playing Weakness and then forget to turn it down again when Weakness ends... major ear exposion :)

Heavy.. and dark.. pretty much the darkest song from Opeth, it's no surprise that Mikael was in depression at that moment. Very particular song and I understand why it is underrated, lots of Opeth fans are not really into pure death metal and such brutal stuff. I mean, the whole ambiance in this song and the vocals on it are just heavier than anything else. And the long riffs, long and heavy riff in the middle of the song, that constantly repeats (and this is a good point for the song, actually), wow.

^ And yeah, for the idiot* who talked about "only death vocals", there are clean vocals at the end (my favorite part).
*take it as a joke.

I think the second song of BWP is the heaviest shit ever !!!!! I just love that part it !
well..u make me upload Wreath on my mobile to listen to it now before I sleep !! ah btw i wrote sth inspired by that song guys...maybe it's a good occasion to share it with you guys? it looks like Wreath, it's about my ex (long time ago) :
falling inside again
i know that no one'll understand
the bloody writing on the wall
except the one who wrote them all
Lost in the darkness again
i've came to term of a misplaced man
familar laughter fills the room
silent cry breaks the moon
Loath runs in my veins
i'm still burning neath this rain
thoughts of death desecrate my brain
chewed by feelings of regret and pain
memory keeps hunting me
like the night hunts the day eternaly
no place to hide no place to rest
i'm too weak to make this test
I discard the transparant disguise
to show u the rage behind my eyes
can u see the pain of mine
i delivered my heart, now it's thine
I fall down in silence
while love shows its violence
punish me for trying to fly
when i wanted to write your name in the sky

Rock ! Rock for the right
