WTF is Devin doing with this?

He's just tracking the vocal into both mics at once. He's probably using the SM7 for a warmer, smoother tone and the e609 for a grungier, more midrangey tone. He may be processing the two mics separately as well.

I like to do this with an AKG 414 and an SM57 or Beyer M160, it adds a nice texture.

That live room in The Armoury is fucking MASSIVE. Like TOO BIG almost. He's just getting a closer, more in-your-face, drums in a booth type feel to the tracks.

+100, i checked out the pics, that place is huge!!

Boxing in drums always makes em bigger IMO...

check out DIO's Holy Diver album - in interviews he says they had the drummers back to the window and boxed him in with sheets of plywood...

Devin really needs to get on this forum and tell us all how he makes the wall of sound.
What I love about the drums on Alien is how he gets sampled snare to sound so big.

That's weird, I would imagine a lot of nasty comb filtering if you box drums in, such as being in a small room...

No idea as i haven't had a great deal of experience with recording drums, but it seemed to work...

the best room i recorded drums in was a weird triangular shape (had apparently been designed by acoustic engineers) it wasn't a small room but wasn't that big either...

FTR guys, Devin didn't mix this (or the preceding or following SYL albums), so I wouldn't necessarily give him too much credit for the snare sound! ;)

You don't BOX it in, you add sound absorbing walls to ease the ambience.

Yeah in that room you have to do that. Got to track there one time and without the "tent", the drums sound like Led Zepplin. The tent also has one other cool feature, which is it keeps the cymbals out of the room a little more.
