The title says it all... List a few (or more) of your most favorite prog metal albums. Describe their style, the vocal style, what you like about them.
imo the only tracks on that album that arent weak are Egypt, C&O, and Rediscovery.
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
No need to explain though "The Warning" actually started it all for me.
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Introspective, melodic, prog metal with glass shattering vocals by Ray Alder! Check out "Static Acts"! Zonder's first FW album sets the band apart. Nice companion to same era QR, only heavier with slick Production. Top 5, all time!
Crimson Glory - Transcendence
Awesome! Midnight's vocals are one of a kind & glass shattering at times. Great riffage & rhythms. Check out "In Dark Places"! Part fantasy/introspective lyrics. Another great companion to early QR & FW.
Symphony X - V
No need to explain. I sure wish they would go back in this direction or at least, bring back the dynamic vocals!
Dream Theater - Awake
Last DT I really like. I prefer the drum sound on this album & Kevin Moore's playing over future releases.
Savatage - Wake of Magellan
Concept album. Thick, chugging guitars. (Good but far removed from Chriss Oliva's signature sound.). Bits of symphonic, blues, opera (The operatic/queen-style layered vocals are great!) Zak Stevens handles most of the vocals (Great but far removed from Jon Oliva's signature sound.) but Jon does sing a couple & plays keys throughout. The most progressive Savatage album that I'm aware of. Great Stuff!
