Your favourite hand drawn album covers

Yes.

What logos has he drawn?

I'm a huge fan of his coverart.

I know he's done the Dissection, Liers In Wait, and Grotesque logos, I believe he's done more than that though.

I FUCKING LOVE MICHAEL WHELANS DRAWINGS!! I'm definatly not an arts person and hate people who talk bullshit about paintings that look like a kindergarten drawings...but this guy makes me look at his pictures for like half an hour and think...Like the one above..it just makes me think about murders in general and how fucked up the world is etc etc

lol - there is nothing smart about that drawing - it's a "wouldn't it be cool to draw a knife in a skeleton's hand" drawing.

Better than I could do, but not all that creative imo

Scott

Look at the use of light..it makes the picture so much more grim, sure you could just say its a skeleton..but is it REALLY a skeleton? Does it not depict a heartless murderer? Symboled by the lack of organs, well personally I think its a great picture..but I guess its every man for himself

Pretty much all the Iced Earth's and Iron Maiden's for me. Glorious Burden is a masterpiece of art...looks like something you'd see in an art museum.

Travis Smith did Something Wicked, Alive In Athens, Horror Show, and the Dark Genesis art and his artwork is mostly digital.

Are you saying those covers are digital, or most of his work is digital?

If you can paint digitally on a computer, it's no different than traditional mediums in my mind. It's a lot different than cut/paste/clone tool that most manips use. I would still call them paintings, regardless of where he drew them at.

Agreed. It is as valid a piece of art as a hand drawn picture, as long as it isn't just a digital changed version of a picture created by someone else.

I'm saying all of his work is digital. If there is anything he draws, he scans it to manipulate into his artwork digitally. Usually he uses photos though. He specifically does not do hand-drawn art.

Edit: I did some more research and apparently for some of the IE and D&W covers someone else sent him sketches that he scanned in to work with. So those covers were a little bit of both mediums, but definatelly not fully hand drawn.

Well if someone else is sending him drawings, and he's just suping them up, then yeah...that's not the sweet artist I thought he was.

But if he scans in his drawings to fix them up - that's still a great artist.

No offense to traditional artists, but most drawings/paintings can look a little off in the translation to digital form (which is what happens when you take a pic and print off it nowdays). Fixing things in the computer just makes them look better.

Well, like I said that was for the IE covers. He is still a sweet artist. He just uses digital instead of hand-drawn techniques.

In THIS picture, for example, I happen to know that his child posed for the shadowy straw figure and that knife was an actual photo. He's doing more than just "suping them up".

See http://www.seempieces.com for most of his work.

Hah...awesome design. The font looks horrible to me though...but very cool cover. It has the feel of a manip though. I always thought the combination of hand drawn work and digital manipping makes for the best designs. It's like taking the best of both worlds and putting them together.

Thanks for the link bro - I'm adding that to my fave to browse every so often.

Check out the CJSS artwork....lol...THAT is awesome.

Definitely one of the best cover artists I've ever seen. I never would have put him in connection with Iced Earths.

>>>May I kindly ask you to refrain from saying "manip?"

Why?

I'm a graphic artist, and sorry...that's the term we use. It's the norm in the digital art community. No one wants to spell out photomanipulation all the time.
